Good day:
AVG has, on 2 consecutive occasions, detected a threat it calls "IDP.Adware.EC91431C", in C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.communitygrid.org\wcg_hcmd2_maxdo_graphics_6.40_windows_intelx86. The software I installed was the most recent from the WCG website, namely wcg_boinc_6.10.58_windows_intelx86.exe. Please could you explain why this is happening, until which time I will cease all activity and uninstall the software as a precaution. Many thanks. |

If you search for AVG in this forum you will see many instances (100% ?) that AVG is invariably wrong and it's a false positive!
----------------------------------------See this thread which recommends you exempt the Boinc set of directories which will stop the false positive problem. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,32220_offset,0#354242 |

Hi xytron, I understand your caution, although running WCG's version of BOINC software is perfectly safe - as are all the files that are brought down/processed on your computer.
----------------------------------------IBM (the company behind World Community Grid), ensure that nothing untoward gets downloaded (virus' etc.), by compiling all their own code/ring fencing all the WCG environment so as to ensure that it's perfectly safe to run WCG on your (and everyone else's) computer. After all, if a virus was discovered to have originated from WCG (and hence, IBM), then one of the biggest computer companies in the world's reputation would be shot to pieces (as well as that of the whole Distributed Computing world). Indeed, after well over 7 years of contributing/partaking on these forums, I've never heard/come across an instance of a virus being caused through this software. To prevent such warnings from occuring in the future, I'm sure that, within the AVG software, there'll be an option to ignore the C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ directory (and all it's subdirectories). That's what I, and numerous others do. ![]() |

Hi folks: thanks to those with constructive feedback. I automatically do not regard any software as infallible lol. What has me additionally worried is that I am using two machines, identical OS and updates, identical AVG installations, yet problems only on the one machine. I will keep a very beady eye on things.
Greetings! |

AVG has become a piece of joke now.
Suggestion: uninstall it and use something else that is MUCH better (e.g. Avast!, etc.) |

Hi folks: thanks to those with constructive feedback. I automatically do not regard any software as infallible lol. What has me additionally worried is that I am using two machines, identical OS and updates, identical AVG installations, yet problems only on the one machine. I will keep a very beady eye on things. Greetings! Alot of people have seen this with multiple brands of a/v software, what most of us now do is exempt the Boinc directory from the a/v scan. This prevents the, normally, false positives and gets down to the real nitty gritty of what you want your a/v software to do, detect real viruses. If it is a real virus, or other problem,it will NOT confine itself to the Boinc directories and instead attempt to infect the rest of your pc too, at that point your a/v program, AVG in your case, will catch it. But even if it were a virus as long as it ONLY infects the Boinc directories do we really care? I know I don't, it is not a problem for my machine as it isn't spreading and it will be caught at each projects Server end when my pc talks to it. I DO run a/v software 24/7, like most people do, but I do NOT actively scan my Boinc directories. I DO scan my Boinc directories when I scan for Malware, I scan for Malware once a month, or on a daily basis depending on the machine. My Boinc only machines get scanned once a month just prior to their backup, machines used for other things get registered software that does daily scans. ![]() ![]() |

Likewise, I have eight systems running AVG and never a false positive. People are always quick to denigrate whichever system/software they are not using. It's usually best to get reviews from people who actually use the product.
