But, starting with my oldest machine, an i7-920, one can not simple run even desktops at 100%/100% of CPU's. Heat is the problem. No machine are at 100%/100%. Dedicated machines (24/7 crunchers) need to have oversize cooling systems installed, not the stock coolers, to run at 100+% Not necessarily true. 6 of my machines are 24/7 and all of them have stock coolers. Two of them are servers which are made for 24/7 running at full speed,, the others are desktops. I make sure I blow them out periodically and do not let the dust bunnies build up in them, especially on the heat sinks and all of the external vents. With good airflow, although the exhaust air is warm, they stay cool enough to stay functioning. Of course, if you overclock you will need better cooling. Cheers I too do not use much other than stock air coolers, I have a couple of course but most are just whatever came with the cpu. I do try to put in extra cooling fans but not all cases can handle them. I also own power company stock, and have for MANY years! I decided since they have a mandate by the State to give a return every year I will recoup some of the money I pay them. I was even on the monthly investment plan for awhile, I even put a kid thru college with the proceeds! I live in Virginia and have Dominion Resources Power Company and the stock is now in the low 50's, I started when it was in the high single digits!! I pay about double what my neighbors pay for their electricity, I pay between $500 and $600 a month. ![]() ![]() |

I just meant to say that if you have problems running 100% 24/7 (like mitrichr) and you have to cut threads or use a throttle program, then an aftermarket cooler would be necessary to take full advantage of your machine.

Sorry you are of course correct! One problem I have is the older cases that I often reuse do not support the cooling needed for dual gpu's and that makes everything hotter. I DO have some Zalman cpu cooolers and even have a couple of Hyper 212 Plus cpu coolers too. It HELPS leaving the side off for me too. Most of my pc's have no sides and are on shelves pumping out the heat in my basement. It is 65F outside and 86F in my basement! ![]() ![]() |

I suppose in the cooler times you just open the door to the upstairs and let the heat head up and warm the house. 86 seems a might warm for a basement. Cheers

1. It varies. But I have one permanent home-built machine with an OC'd Intel 3930K with 12 threads. And then I have my previous PC which this new one replaced as my main machine. It is not on atm though. 2. I bought the parts and built PCs with them. :) Some older parts and chassis I got for free from classified ads. 3. I don't have Facebook, but I have Twitter since like a couple of weeks ago, but I only have one follower and I myself only follow that person and WCG on Twitter...and so it will probably remain as things are looking now...I believe you get an idea of the size of my social network...but still I retweet important WCG tweets, perhaps they won't pass by unnoticed, who knows? Thanks Flodisar for the feedback... How about recruiting colleagues/friends/family ? Any other suggestions for spreading WCG ? |

I fix pc's for a hobby so have 11 Boinc machines running right now, and 2 non Boinc machines. Of the 11 Boinc machines 2 are 6 core machines, 4 are 4 core machines and the rest are dual core machines. The 2 non Boinc machines are a 4 core Mac laptop my wife won't let me use and her dual core work laptop I won't touch. All but 3 of the 11 have gpu's that ALSO crunch in them, 2 of which have dual gpu's in them. I got MOST of my pc's by replacing firends pc's and they gave me their old parts which I now crunch with. I also pick up pc's on the side of the road and after wiping the hard drives use them too. I have over half a dozen pc's needing very little work to get them up and running sitting on the floor but my house is maxed out on its electricity usage, some of the outlets were getting EXTREMELY WARM so I had to unplug 2 pc's! Working on peoples pc's sometimes they give me cash and I do use that to buy newer parts, such as the 2 6 core machine I built for $400US each. At Christmas I only ask for cash, or specific pc parts, and get enough to buy parts with that too. I have not been able to get others to crunch too though, they just don't see any short term possibilities of finding anything worthwhile. I have been crunching since 1999 and am #72 in the World so won't stop, but just can't seem to convince others to join me in the search. My old work considered it, with over 10,000 pc's they would have been a FORMIDABLE Team themselves, but the local power company offered to cut their rates if they ran a piece of software that shuts all idle pc's off at night. This saved the power company from having to build a new power plant and saved my old work a TON of money too! What a factory you've got mikey159b :) - How about distributing un-needed PCs in your house to needy NGOs/orphanages, on the condition of leaving them running 24/7 and connected to the net ? You'll be able to keep your eye on them through the My Grid thing of the WCG website ! - As for your old work, is it still an option, or is the case closed now ? I think if you could manage to make them run WCG during normal working hours idle time, it would be already great, and wouldn't make a lot of usage difference as it will only be during the normal working hours anyway ! - Do you have any suggestions on how to replicate what you're doing elsewhere, or other ideas ? |

I currently have 28 cores crunching on 10 separate machines. Of the 10 I have only bought 1 new. The rest have been bought used, some at auctions, or salvaged and put together from parts. I have about maxed out how much power I am allowed to use(by my better half, not the power company). When I can get a machine more efficient than my least efficient machine, I retire the old one and donate it to someone else or a charitable organization who can use it. The most obsolete machines are recycled. Needless to say, with salvage parts I have had my share of hardware failures, motherboards, hard drives, power supplies etc. Thank goodness there are some very generous people out there who supply excess parts very reasonably. The biggest cost is electricity. Cheers Wow, exciting, but the machines you donate, do they keep crunching in the next homes ? Could you make them ? How about as well distributing the currently running machines on your end that you don't need to NGOs as you do, on the condition of letting them run 24/7 with you checking on them through the grid results, and on site every month or something ? Any other ideas about hiring individuals/corporates to crunch ? |

1: 8 machines, 32 cores. All Q6600's. 2: Purchased 4, built the other 4. (Going to purchase stock in my Electric Co.) 2a: 3 Linux, 2 Win XP, 2 Win Vista, 1 Win 7. 3: I'll stick with these for now. Nice stack gomeyer, any ideas how best to build such cost efficiently ? How about recruitment/spreading the workforce to friends/colleagues ? Any suggestions ? |

58 cores/threads on 7 computers good for around 200,000ppd...built all by me from discount parts obtained from the internet and local stores. I used to overclock all my systems until I discovered you can get about 75% of the performance for 50% of the power bill by running them stock or even under-clocking in some cases. In the winter time the extra heat from overclocking is nice, though! 2 X i7-2600k 3 X Phenom ii x6 1 X 24 core (2 X 12 core) AMD Opteron server build ryan222h, wow ! How about extensions/recruitment ? How do you plan to increase work on your end, or using others around ? |
