Re: BOINC Source - Higher Defaults

- WCG Default for CPU time, was 60% and understand it was decided to become 50% [lowest chance of fan kick in at this interval setting]
- WCG Default for pause when user load is above 50% [think Berkeley has this upped now to 75% from 25%]
- WCG Default, pause client when system in use.
- WCG Default, Standard profile [preset] and client "Run based on preferences".

Safety first for equipment, and maximum unobtrusive operation to the user as *Prime directive*.

Agree now with the safety rule, but glad to see this is a dynamic subject for the berkley team... thnx

Re: BOINC Source - Higher Defaults

Thanks Branjo for the feedback, then what would you think about an in-between increase of usage ? from 25 to 50 for exmaple ?

IDK. Users who do not change default settings are usually less experienced, thus more scared from "doing-something-bad-for-my-computer". Could you imagine if those users have to experience 70 - 80 degrees Celsius hot cover of their PC's (what could happen when BOINC settings are maxed with not very powerful fans)? With probability approaching certainty I can say they will get rid of "some WCG and BOINC" from their comps.

i see..

Re: BOINC Source - Higher Defaults

Hello everyone,

I would like to propose a compromise between "safe" defaults and "max power" defaults.

Wouldn't it be a good thing, if BOINC autmatically checked the parameters being active on a "new" users machine half a year after installation?

If this automatic check shows that defaults have been unchaged, BOINC could display a window informing the user about how to change defaults, if he or she wishes to do so?

This could be a proposal for the next BOINC version.

Thank you for bringing up the defaults topic.

I is really worth discussing it, because the Grid could indeed gain a lot of power if users actively changed them to more power.

One more thing: I do not know whether the techs have the possibility to find out, whether a majority of users crunching for a long time already has changed "their" defaults or not.

If not, they should also actively be informed about the possibility to do so.

Maybe in the next World Community Grid newsletter?
All the best for you.
Bye
Kafejka

Re: BOINC Source - Higher Defaults

Well, here is the problem with your concept Kafejka. (or at least from my experience) I already find the popups from BOINC next to the clock in Windows to be annoying and have actively disabled them. Some of my customers/friends/family who have given me permission to run BOINC on their machines and have been explained what it does also get annoyed when they receive notifications (popups). I have even had some of them describe their annoyance asking me what that "bionic" (yes they mis-read it like many posters) thing is and if they can get rid of it. So, encouraging more pop-ups or notifications in my opinion would make things worse. People who care will make the effort.

Re: BOINC Source - Higher Defaults

How about emailing instead with some education/orientation about this matter to a criteria of users such as the one Kafejka mentioned ?

Re: BOINC Source - Higher Defaults

The same annoying thing :-(.

I am afraid there is not enough CA's and/or experienced users (willing to help) on this forum to handle requests and/or complains from people who do not change default settings intentionally with awareness what they are doing if BOINC or WCG would force them to run DCing with higher-level settings.

I am meeting such people daily in my work (I am not an IT professional), on forums, among my friends. Forcing them to do more than "click-start-programs-msoffice-word.exe" is road to nowhere. Unfortunately.

Cheers and NI!

Edit to correct typos.

Re: BOINC Source - Higher Defaults

The current WCG defaults for BOINC, as I see it, seem to be based on sound real-world principles. How well those defaults meet the optimum settings to get maximum contribution off the real-world -- is another matter. If I have to give a score, I'd say WCG has it just about right. Those who want to do a higher level of crunching than what the defaults initially allow them -- would take the TIME (time, intelligence, money, and effort) to realize that higher-level.
