I mostly process HFCC project units but there is one Clean Energy Phase 2 running on my system at the moment. It has clocked up in excess of 124 CPU hours and is still showing 0.000% progress. I'm sure I had similar problems in the past with this project though have no concrete evidence to hand.
I'm running Windows 7 on an i7 quad core processor with BOINC restricted to 50% of available processors so multi-streaming 4 tasks at a time. Any help appreciated. Ray |

Hi Rpugh,
Generally, if you don't see a task make progress after an hour, just abort it. My I7 processes the CEP2 just fine. They need lots of memory so have allowed BOINC to use 6 of 8 GB of RAM and set the "Leave application in memory when suspended", when it's paused, so it does not loose progress when using the computer [otherwise it unloads]. How else to remedy? Post a copy of the BOINC message log from the start, to where computing starts. Then we can have a look at the BOINC setup. Maybe there's something simple that can be fixed, to get CEP2 also running successfully for you. |

Thanks for the advice Rob.
----------------------------------------I've now changed the profile to leave in memory when suspended. I restarted the computer to get a clean log (below), and the CEP2 task reset its elpased time to zero. As you suggest I shall abort it. 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Starting BOINC client version 6.10.58 for windows_x86_64 03/09/2012 12:01:19 log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Libraries: libcurl/7.19.7 OpenSSL/0.9.8l zlib/1.2.3 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Running under account 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Processor: 8 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz [Family 6 Model 26 Stepping 5] 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Processor: 256.00 KB cache 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Processor features: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss htt tm pni ssse3 cx16 sse4_1 sse4_2 nx lm vmx tm2 popcnt pbe 03/09/2012 12:01:19 OS: Microsoft Windows 7: Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 1, (06.01.7601.00) 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Memory: 11.99 GB physical, 23.98 GB virtual 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Disk: 465.66 GB total, 256.35 GB free 03/09/2012 12:01:19 Local time is UTC +1 hours 03/09/2012 12:01:26 ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 4600 series (R730) (CAL version 1.4.1385, 1024MB, 384 GFLOPS peak) 03/09/2012 12:01:26 ATI GPU 1: ATI Radeon HD 4600 series (R730) (CAL version 1.4.1385, 1024MB, 384 GFLOPS peak) 03/09/2012 12:01:27 World Community Grid URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID 1597028; resource share 100 03/09/2012 12:01:27 World Community Grid General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 14-Jul-2011 17:42:11) 03/09/2012 12:01:27 World Community Grid Host location: none 03/09/2012 12:01:27 World Community Grid General prefs: using your defaults 03/09/2012 12:01:27 Reading preferences override file 03/09/2012 12:01:27 Preferences: 03/09/2012 12:01:27 max memory usage when active: 9209.31MB 03/09/2012 12:01:27 max memory usage when idle: 9209.31MB 03/09/2012 12:01:39 max disk usage: 4.00GB 03/09/2012 12:01:39 max CPUs used: 4 03/09/2012 12:01:39 suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 75 % 03/09/2012 12:01:39 (to change preferences, visit the web site of an attached project, or select Preferences in the Manager) 03/09/2012 12:01:39 Not using a proxy 03/09/2012 12:01:39 Suspending computation - initial delay Ray [Edit 1 times, last edit by Rpugh at Sep 3, 2012 2:23:52 PM] |

Hi again,
Your log looks fine. The only item I'd up [costs nothing], is this 03/09/2012 12:01:39 max disk usage: 4.00GB You've set BOINC limit to 4GB. A CEP2 job on it's own uses lots, so would increase this to the [BOINC default] value of 10GB, as you've got 256GB free anyhow. You can do that in the local preferences on the disk tab "Use at most...", meaning BOINC can use that space but wont reserve this. I'd edit out your account name from the log [5th line]. That's a first step to help hackers find their way into your computer, should they try to. |

Hmmmm well I increased disk space too as suggested and now I have another CEP2 task that has been running 26 hours elapsed again with 0.000% progress. Most frustrating as it's just wasting CPU cycles on my machine. Might have to switch to SETI if there's no cure

Or just de-select CEP as a project.

It *is* deselected! I presume I ended up with it in my system as a result of no tasks being available in the projcts I have opted in to.

Hi Rpugh,
----------------------------------------If you don't mind, I'd like to take a stab at it: how long do you usually leave your PC on? Is just in the evening for 3-4 hours, maybe after you get home from work? The reason why I'm asking is this: I've noticed recently on my laptop that with CEP2 tasks, they seem to have the first checkpoint somewhere after 4+ hours or CPU time AND even with the "leave application in memory" option, if I put it on stand by, it would still lose all progress if it hasn't reached that marker. Hope this helps. Cheers! Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world! - Albert Einstein ![]() |

Hi CandymanWCG,
Thanks for the insight. Unfortunately no, quite the opposite. I tend to leave my computer on 24 x7 only rebooting when necessary. The frustrating thing with CEP2 is that clearly in the past I have had tasks successfully complete on one of my computers since I have 56 days worth of attributed results. I can't say categorically they ran on *this* computer however given the relative configurations I believe it is almost certain at least some of these tasks ran to completion on this machine. What I find puzzling is that I don't believe there is anything particularly "special" about my machine or its configuration. The only comparitively non-standard feature on this PC is that all hard drives are RAID 1 mirrored and I know there is some software that can't handle that. |
