Project screensaver brights up the room at night, and wake me up because screen goes white

Dear "Help Fight Childhood Cancer" researchers and programmers. And community. ;-)

I have a problem that may sound dumbfound or a little stupid, because it actually wakes me up when running the project screensaver. (Using BOINC on the PC) When BOINC switches to the "Help Fight Childhood Cancer" project screensaverm the room lights up, and I wake up, often several times some nights.

I have never seen a WHITE screensaver before. I know white is pure, but the same goes for space. And that is black. ;-)

Could you please consider changing the screensaver colour to black instead of white, or give an option to do so if possible, so that I can continue using the World Community Project to help disease research?

Yours sincerely

Most disable the screensaver to save on engery.(That .3 watt add up fast)
I forgot how to disable it but I would recommed you disable it.

edit:to disable it go to your windows screen saver option page and change the screensaver to something you want.

Hi Chiron69,

the screensaver isn't required to process work. Simply disable it. You'll save energy and CPU cycles that will go to the work units rather than the screensaver.

Ok, thanks for the tips, but I rreally like to have the Climateprediction.net, Einstein@Home, SETI,Ibercivis and other savers onscreen, so that I easily can track each project's progression, and thei are all mostly black. But if nothing happens with the saver colour, I will either change saver, or remove myself from the World Community Grid, which I'm not happy to do.. I hope someone has a fix for the actual project screensaver. ;-) Have a nice day, and thanks for the response. ;)

Visit section 1-T of the Start Here FAQ index: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=21501 for most all there is to know about screensavers and that one of BOINC too, that can be set to go blank and idle after X minutes. *Never* set to no screensaver. If at all choose the *blank* with [system/user] password. *Some* say they don't worry about someone stealing the computer or walk by access and read private stuff... nothing secret on there they'd insert. Well, those *some* can do what they want... read your mail box e.g. [of course, a retort to that too will be earned]. At any rate, just some advise... do with the suggestions as applies.

Some remedy not covered in those FAQ entries for solution? Let us know and it get's added.

Possible low tech solutions depending on your setup:
1. Turn the monitor off while you sleep
2. If you can't turn the monitor off, turn it to face the wall while you sleep
3. If #1 and #2 are not feasible, get a piece of cardboard and place it in front of the monitor during your sleep time.
4. Wear a blindfold while you sleep.

Cheers

It is always pity to see somebody leave because of such childish reason, but it is up to you. People come, people leave. C'est la vie.

Good luck and NI!

chiron69,

The HFCC screensaver will fix itself as the science finishes in 2 to 3 weeks: http://bit.ly/WCGPI1, and since WCG has a dozen or so projects, you can deselect HFCC now here e.g. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProjects.do and still contribute without the nightly wake-up. Generally I push the powerbutton. Standby is fine, but anything standby eats a couple of watts. All the standby stuff in our house added up to 1Kw a day, so by routinely flipping the master switches for each apparatus group, we're saving as much as about the monthly power budget we've set. We're not living in a disposable world even when part of our income is.

Hey, do you have BOINC manager in the 'Simple' or 'Advanced' view? Advanced view might help you to keep a watch on things without the screen saver.

Re: Project screensaver brights up the room at night, and wake me up because screen goes white

Another option that works well with laptops with Windows is to go into power setting and enable the F3 option. That lets you use the Fn-F3 combo to turn off the screen. There's also an option to turn off the screen after a set amount of time of inactivity that you could set to something low. Between the two, use the Fn-F3 to turn the screen off before you go to bed and the other setting will turn it back off during the night if something causes it to come back on in the night. Another option is to simply turn down the screen brightness to where it's dark during the night.
