"small team challenge"... really?

How can you issue a "small team challenge" and allow a team like Team China to participate in it??? I have nothing against Team China. But they have no business in a small team challenge when the team has more than 2000 active members...
Just saying...
If you're going to issue a SMALL team challenge, there should be a way to limit which teams can participate, ie, blocking teams with over a given number of members. There's no point in teams that actually ARE small participating.
It's not just Team China. The smallest of the top 5 teams (on day one of the challenge) has over 400 members... that's not SMALL. And some of those have over 25 devices... on one membership.
I believe the captain of Team Thompson (with only 5 members) had a different idea in mind, like actual SMALL TEAMS participating. But even Team Thompson doesn't stand a chance against UK or Team China in a Small Team Challenge.

Re: "small team challenge"... really?

We hear you, terianne929. Some team captains do not "read" the words in the challenge title and simply hit the join button... some maybe even do not understand English. E.g. Chinese has it's language choice to have part of the website presented in native tongue. At any rate, concur with your suggestion. I've thought of a description box so there could be a little explanation with the challenge objective when they are set up. "This challenge is intended for teams that ... ". The dicey part of free texting with this is some word choices that might not be perceived as inviting and moderating required by the admins which takes away time, but then captains are supposed to know the rule book of conduct and etiquette ;o)

TKH/ErikaT, could you please move this thread to Suggestions & Feedback.

Thanks

Re: "small team challenge"... really?

terianne929 The point you make has merit and probably the UK team should not be participating in this particular challenge. But how is a "Small Team" defined? You say Team China has over 2,000 active members. "Active" is not a WCG term. If you mean "Current Members" the UK has 443, but this total includes 23 members who have never crunched since sign-up. Of the remaining 420 members only 115 have been active in 2012. Anyone for a Small "Active" Team Challenge?

Re: "small team challenge"... really?

It's all a matter of pespective.

We are still a "small team" compared to the stupidly large teams...... so do you mean small team? or small small team? :)

Re: "small team challenge"... really?

It is not a matter of number of members, but the number of devices. There are crunchers with hundreds of devices, even some with thousands. Such people alone are bigger than any mid-sized or small team.

Cheers and NI!

Re: "small team challenge"... really?

That's what made me do some research when setting up the Small Team Invitational. I looked for teams with under 100 members using "Find a Team". Then went to each team's stats page to see who the captain is/was because only the captain can accept challenges, correct? A couple teams had NO captain as he/she had retired. Many captains had no activity (no gold bars in the activity charts, and yes I clicked each captain's stats). But eventually I had a list of 25 teams.

Does an invitation to a challenge show up anywhere the team captain could see it? I don't see any thing that sends an email to the captain, and I'm guessing the only other way they'll see it is in the list of current challenges in the Challenge Control Panel on the Team Stats page.

I also noticed there isn't a way to opt/back out of a challenge once accepted. This is something I wanted to do after seeing who the other teams were in TeamThompson's challenge.

In a perfect world of individuals who would like to issue challenges, there'd be a way to limit participation to those who fall within given parameters (number of members, activity, devices, etc.), but that's probably difficult to program (not a task I'd want to tackle).

Thanks for "listening"

Re: "small team challenge"... really?

I noticed that when I was a member of "The Knights who say Ni!" And YOU, branjo, joined after me and passed me like I was sitting still, which is OK. It was like my own "challenge" to get to page one of each stat (points, run time, results). The best was page 2 of points, page 3 of run time and results before I retired.
KWSN is what I consider a "small team", but the captain never accepted any challenges.
Life happens, I guess...

Re: "small team challenge"... really?

There are few reason why I "passed some of my fellow teammates like they were sitting still" and why I already moved to the team's first pages in all 3 parameters:

- since I joined WCG less than 3 months ago, I put all my resources in its services: both my PC with 6 cores combined are running 24/7, 100% CPU's, 100% WCG,
- 4 of these cores are quite strong - i5 2,7 GHz - in very good optimized iMac,
- almost half of the time I shrubbed CMD2 - the best "paying" sub-project (almost double points/credits per hour than others).

Our captain Al Dente is inactive in WCG for a long time, so that is probably why he has not reacted on your challenge :-(. I can see better captain, the real guru of WCG, but I am guessing (s)he is shrubbing his/her WCG shrubs and do not have such ambitions whistling

Good luck my former teammate and NI! peace

Re: "small team challenge"... really?

NI!

There should be a way to usurp the kingdom for a more worthy knight (take over a team from a captain who has abandoned his team members). I'll keep an eye on KWSN. If a more worthy knight becomes CAPTAIN... I'll review my answers to "the questions three" and resume the quest with the rest of the knights...

And I acknowledge the "prowess" of your noble steeds (computers)! Well done!
