Danny Boyle should be knighted for that...

The essence, spirit of Britain

Maybe it might go some way to explain some of my passions and frustrations with this previously Great land.

I agree! biggrin

I admit to being sceptical beforehand and was prepared to be embarrassed. Instead I was astounded by Danny Boyles vision. Full credit to him!

Re: Danny Boyle should be knighted for that...

He opened the Olympics with a magnificent speech starring London. I have just read a post by John Lambshead, a British SF author, on the Baen's Bar SF forum. He and his extended family sat down to watch the Olympic opening ceremonies, expecting to sneer at trite overwrought nonsense. Instead, they were overwhelmed by a truly great oration.

Yes, I think many people were sceptical beforehand - even right in the early days when the UK had won the Olympics (after all, would the stadia be ready in time - going on the past history of the Wembley Stadium fiasco).

Then, after seeing the spectacular Beijing games opening ceremony, no one thought we'd be able to better it - but, thankfully, in our own way, Danny Boyle (and all the rest of the people involved) created a spectacular ceremony, one which will be remembered for all the right things.

Well done to one and all.

I thoroughly enjoyed the opening ceremonies. It was refreshing and fun and perhaps gave us a sense of what it is to be British. Congratulations to all our British crunchers.

Saw 5 minutes... and so happens to be Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean personage beaming in... http://www.notenews.it/index.php/attualita/it...monia-trionfo-danny-boyle . The title 100,000 strokes [or jokes as may be the literal translation]!

Nothing to add. The best opening ceremony I can remember. Congratulations for that and let's hope for fair, doping-free and spectacular sports events.

Clearly, the Queen "stole the show" and, while I didn't follow all of the storyline from this side of the pond, it seemed an Opening Ceremony the UK could be proud of. I still want to google a couple of items in the show to better understand the background.

AGREED, the only change would have to play a tape when Sir Paul sang, he was sooo off key he was obviously old as dirt and showing it! Good opening but Elton John would have been a good alternate choice, a tribute to Diana and some of his other inspiring songs would have gone over better than "just the girls, I love it when the girls sing"! I DID like the Queen getting in on the spoof, she carried if off VERY well! I do wish she would have been a bit more excited when the British athletes came into the stadium though. She could have been a bit tired though, it was a lot of athletes, and some didn't show up as they needed their rest for the early am events! IMO they need to schedule that better next time! The athletes should get their chance to walk pre AND post, it could be a once in a lifetime event for them!!
