Screen saver locking up my computer, hard.

Several times lately, the World Community Grid screensaver has come up, then will *not* go away when I try to use the computer. Even 3-fingering it doesn't fix the problem, I have to turn the power supply off to get my computer to re-start. This has only recently started happening (after I monkied around a bit with the computer, it's now on a different motherboard), but I haven't had problems with anything else, just WCG. Any idea what's going on?...

Have you tried setting screensaver to none? I never use a screensaver as it wastes CPU cycles which are much better spent on crunching. biggrin

This is going to sound . . . cynical? . . jaded? With all the different projects coding screensavers for Mac / Linux / Windows I have adopted the practice of using a non-BOINC screensaver. A simple (blank) or stars never gives me any problem. The project screensavers for BOINC sometimes seem to have strange interactions.

Re: Screen saver locking up my computer, hard.

I'm... not terribly computer-savvy. I'm not sure how to set it up so it does its thing *without* the screen saver (besides, I kind of like knowing what project it's working on). So far, it hasn't happened again after my friend deleted at least some of the files and reinstalled it, our thought is that something may have gotten corrupted when he cloned my hard drive. If it does come back, what details would be helpful to know for diagnosing the problem?...

The following always helps for starters:

Computers O/S & version.
BOINC version.
What the PC was doing.
Any error messages.
Any changes you recently did.

Re: Screen saver locking up my computer, hard.

Hello tamtrible.

Welcome to the WCG-forum.

Screensavers are no longer 'cool' these days as they once were. I'd recommend the response from lawrencehardin and Scribe: do away with that screensaver! cool

Re: Screen saver locking up my computer, hard.

The requested stats:

Windows XP Service pack 3
CPU Pent 4 2.66 Ghz
Ram 2 GB DDR2
BOINC Ver. 6.10.58
Firefox and IM program running in the background with a gagillion tabs open (yes, yes, I know, but it was never a problem before)
No Error messages--it just never came back from the screen saver, even with control-alt-delete. The mouse would move, but nothing else would happen.
Swapped MB (and case) recently, and cloned HD to new drive
