I know it was brought up early on, but now that we have had a few BETA runs and some additional input from knreed, it seems like WCG has a pretty good idea on what is currently needed or at least what is not currently capable.
----------------------------------------Here are a few helpful links where we were given some insight as time flew by. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ad,33359_offset,20#382769 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ead,32834_offset,0#369305 I still haven't heard anything from the techs on why some of the low end nVidia cards such as the 210's weren't being tested with the BETA's. According to the above thread, they should meet the requirements. So, having a list of non-compatible cards that is updated as BETA work is completed may be helpful. It might also reduce user frustration on trying to get work. I was glad to have read that the 520 was black listed because that told me to quit trying with it. The others were just in the dark. My 430 works great but I picked it up late in the game. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Coleslaw at Jul 7, 2012 4:28:57 AM] |

What about system requirements instead of card listings of what works or doesn't work.

What about system requirements instead of card listings of what works or doesn't work. Do you have a simple way that non-techies would understand without a lot of research? Currently I find that comparing cards with one another to be irritating as it is. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I have decided that the best course is to wait until the system goes live, check and see if my existing cards are ok, if not then upgrade to a known good one....

What about system requirements instead of card listings of what works or doesn't work. I see it that supported GPU-cards need to be specified sooner or later and down to specific models (family/series names). A general OpenCL_v this and that compliant -- may end up being a hit-or-miss affair. Supporting any card that happens to be called a "GPU" or having GPU-like capabilities -- is not practical. To facilitate a GPU-launch as early as possible, the mainstream GPU-cards need to have the first shot of the GPU-computing game. The extreme-end, too-new, or low-end types will have to stay on the sidelines for a season, perhaps more, with the too-old placed on retirement. The same idea goes for the OS: WinXP will have to settle to just watching (and not playing) the GPU-computing game.; |

I agree with this to an extent. You can't just go off of say nVidia's list and take it for its word because it is actually just a general list. For example: The nVidia 8400GS (which is slightly different then the 8400 GS. notice the space) orinally had 16 CUDA cores and was 1.1 compute capable. However, I have seen 8 Cuda core versions now as well as cards that are compute capable of 1.2. Video ram fluctuates from 256MB to 1GB on these. (The 8400 was typically 128MB or less) So, some of these cards may be acceptable and some not. This will only continue through pretty much all generations as they evolve and is mostly an OEM differential. However, since we are still in BETA, it isn't yet clear what will and wont work when full production begins. That is why I suggested making a list of what isn't compatible at this time based on what the techs have found.
