Cache in site prefs not being observed? [RESOLVED]

Hi,

I have my cache set so I can have 1 day of extra work. However, it's not working that way. It's only giving me 0.0 days of work. Basically I'm only getting 1 WU for each core and when those are done it uploads then requests more, again only 1 per core. Did something happen during the "problem" from yesterday that could cause this? I'm using Boinc 6.12.34 and have been all along. Never had this problem previously.

Re: Cache in site prefs not being observed?

If there is a global_prefs_override.xml in the BOINC data directory, you've activated local prefs. How to remove them is in the manual [hit clear button in BOINC Manager > computing preferences]. Else, if "connect about every..." and "additional buffer" are set on the website, they will be adhered to... except if your computer produces iffy results, but we're not assuming that, or it's suddenly so slow, the client might think they need too long to compute. Without message log data and config it's all a big guess.

There's no such file on my entire hdd such as global_prefs_override.xml.

It was working properly before yesterday's problems on the WCG side (at least it was about a week prior, anyway).

Re: Cache in site prefs not being observed?

6/28/2012 11:16:20 AM | World Community Grid | General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 27-Jun-2012 12:25:56)
6/28/2012 11:16:20 AM | World Community Grid | Computer location: home
6/28/2012 11:16:20 AM | World Community Grid | General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults

Whatever defaults profile is set at, that's being used now. Somehow your client thinks it's associated to home, but there is not a Device Profile called home at WCG [for your member registration]. Is that host also attached to other projects outside of WCG where you signed up recently? Doing that can lead to loosing all profiles and the ones of that other project being copied to WCG.

edit: The profile was last modified on June 27 per that top line, somewhere.

Re: Cache in site prefs not being observed?

Host isn't attached to anything other than WCG. I just also told WCG to "Set my profile to the standard settings." and redid them and saved as default now. Then forced an update via Boinc. Still happening the same way. Maybe I'll get it figured out tomorrow. Work beckons. :(

Re: Cache in site prefs not being observed?

There's a quirk discussed on the forums some weeks ago. Delete a profile [home/work/school] and when visiting the device manager, the client is still found to list as being associated to that no-longer-existing profile. This means that if default profile was set as home, and then deleted, the default is still the empty home, so default/default is used. At any rate, something [Leprechaun/Gremlin] saved the profiles and updated them on June 27, and default is being used, whatever values were stored in that one.

Re: Cache in site prefs not being observed?

Hello Bugg,
Your Messages tab says that the profile was changed on 27 June 2012. I suggest you go to My Grid - Device Manager, then click on (Selected Profile) so you can see how much Additional Cache your profile is asking for. Your computer is behaving as though Additional Cache is 0.0 rather than 1.0.

I always use Home as my profile so that I can change it without worrying about Default. I set it to Maximum Output, then modify it using Custom Profile to set Leave Active In Memory on and change cache settings, then SAVE.
