Why does it say no usable GPUs?

I am running World Community Grid, and it keeps saying there is no usable GPU. This is the exact text from the message center:

My computer is running Windows Vista with a AMD Triple Core Processor. My graphics card is a GeForce 6150SE nForce 430. I have a driver installed, but I am not sure if it is the newest one available. I know it is recent by about a few months. Do I need to get a different GPU, or is there something else wrong?

Re: Why does it say no usable GPUs?

Hello Baumer8993,
I don't know, mainly because we are not using GPUs on WCG yet. Maybe someone will answer who knows, but I would hop over to GPUGRID and ask there, giving your GPU and relevant portion of your Messages Tab.

Lawrence

Added query: On the Activity tab of your BOINC Manager, have you selected Use GPU Always? / Use GPU according to preferences? [Our old preferences do not mention GPUs. devilish ] / Use GPU never?
Now that I think about it, this is a real gotcha for BOINC 6.10.58. We really are not running GPUs yet at WCG.

Re: Why does it say no usable GPUs?

As you can see that is a rather low-end card and probably is not supported.

I would upgrade from Vista too as that OS was not very GPU friendly back then. good luck

Re: Why does it say no usable GPUs?

I have to tell you, running GPU processing on BOINC projects not a part of WCG has been really terrific. I really wanted to run GPUGrid, probably because of my bent toward Medicine and Biology from WCG. BUt, I also run Einstein, SETI, and Milky Way which do GPU work.

Credits are only a reference point to measure work done, so that is all that I see as their value; but, I went from 9,000-11,000 credits per day to between 150,000-250,000 per day in a hurry. From 2007 until March 5, 2012, I had a bit over 7,000,000 credits. Since March 6, 2012, i have gone up to over 20,000,000 credits. If credits are fairly assigned and distributed, that is a lot of work done for some very important projects.

I know that WCG is getting into GPU processing; but if a cruncher wants to do it today, then other BOINC projects which he or she deems valuable are the ticket.

Regarding the level of competence for cards, visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/GPU_computing , the BOINC Wiki page on the subject.

Re: Why does it say no usable GPUs?

For an nVidia video card, it needs to be CUDA capable GPU. Here is their list of cards: http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-gpus As you can see, yours is not on that list and is extremely outdated. Yes many systems still come with your graphics onboard, but they just don't have what it takes.

Re: Why does it say no usable GPUs?

Baumer8993 has an ATI card, not nVidia. Am I missing something?

No matter whether you have an AMD or Nvidia gpu for Boinc to find and use it you will NEED to go to the manufacturers website, amd.com or nvidia.com, and download and then install the drivers for your particular gpu and OS. Windows loads a basic set of drivers but they are nearly good enough for crunching with! Yes SOME systems seem to do this on their own, but MOST DO NOT!! Also the latest and greatest drivers favor gaming NOT crunching, so once you find a driver that works don't upgrade unless you have to, or you read that others are crunching faster because of it.

As an aside Nvidia cards use ALOT of the cpu when they crunch, while most AMD cards do not, so if you remember to leave one cpu free for the gpu to use you will be rewarded by your card not being crippled by not getting enough processing time. Gpu's are on average 10 times faster and get SUBSTANTIALLY more credit than a cpu, so you will gain MUCH more than you lose by giving up one core of your cpu.

Ah, the joy of a computer from Maingear Computers, Kenilworth, NJ, USA. I ordered my computer with an i7-3930 hyper threaded six core processor and twin nVidia GTX 580's, both the CPU and the GPU's with sealed liquid coolers. Heat can be a very difficult probelm with GPU crunching. My GPU's had the 295.13 driver from the word go. I am doing GPU work for GPUGrid, Einstein, Milky Way, and Einstein. From 2007 when I started crunching until March 5, 2012, I had just over 7 million credits. In just about exactly 90 days, I have gone to over 21 million credits. If the credits system is equitable, that is a lot of work done. It's not the credits that count; rather it is the amount of work done. WCG remains as my most productive pure CPU project. It has a Resource share of 200, on four machines.
