I am switching a computer from Linux to Win7 and would like to keep the same device name because the computer is still the same computer just a new OS. Is there some file I can save and then put in the directory on the new OS to keep that device name?
Thanks |

you should name it in "my computer" the same as before, then reboot, then boinc will recognize the needed name

Same operating system platform [Linux to Linux] is one of the requirements to keep the same registration under the same numeric ID [the bit that is printed in the message log] such as:
17-May-2012 19:07:24 [World Community Grid] URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID 1856789; resource share 500 The "name" you can keep the same, except you'll be having a new "my computer"... a "my computer II" so to speak. Generally doing a clean installation and restoring a backup of the BOINC data directory, location also printed in the message log during startup such as 17-May-2012 19:07:24 [---] Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC helps retain the same device registration. You could try against odds by making a backup of /var/lib/boinc-client (if e.g. Ubuntu) and put that in the Windows BOINC data directory, but it's a 0.00% chance it will work. For sure all work will be newly downloaded and all the science applications. Summary: You'll be creating a new device, which you can "name" the same. Statistics will start new for that device [the member totals continue] and the old Linux device will be hidden after about 14 days, but you can still see it if you expand the Device Manager filter. --//-- |
