I have been running tasks on two machines for many years now. I have downloaded the code to a new computer. It is running Vista. When the computer is booted up, the BOINC agent start up but no tasks are running. If I check the messages, it shows requesting new tasks, followed by 0 new tasks. I've tried various things but haven't been able to get any tasks running. What am I doing wrong on this one?

For years, running silently, so welcome to the forums.
If you would be so kind to open the BOINC Manager, Message tab, and copy everything from the top to after where the response is not to sent any work. That will tell us a lot. Talk to you later. --//-- |

4/30/2012 5:09:54 PM World Community Grid Host location: none For some reason you do not have a profile specified as near as as I can tell. It should have automatically taken the profife you have checked for the default install. I am thinking if you have nothing checked for a default profile, you get nothing. I could be way off base, but this is the best I ahve. Hope it helps. Cheers

Very odd. It's asking for work and then gets 0, without telling what or why. Think we need a few extra log flags placed in the cc_config.xml to debug this, but first, lets do the following:
1. Set Activity menu to Run Always / Network always available. 2. Open the Task Manager, choose to show all user processes, and see if anything is running, using lots of CPU time. 3. Go to the advanced menu when you're sure that nothing big is using the CPU and do a Run CPU Benchmark (that one appears to fail, and often is a sign of a busy system). When that works and nothing happens, visit the project tab of BOINC, select WCG and hit the update button on left and check again. Tell us what happens. Notably you've installed BOINC at user level registered to Alex. This being Vista and GPU crunching disabled, a service install of BOINC may be the better option. It will then run even when Alex is not logged in. --//-- |

Cheers The line before the one you note indicates that a profile modified on 16.Apr is used. 4/30/2012 5:09:53 PM World Community Grid General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 16-Apr-2012 09:07:33) 4/30/2012 5:09:54 PM World Community Grid Host location: none Any device newly created associates to Default, or any other location that is specified as default. Mine is set to use School. The My Grid > Device manager will confirm which location Host Computer ID 604791 is connected to. The number suggests this is a reused device as new devices are now getting numbers very near 2 million. Lets see where to start.
I had already checked Run Always/Network always Available. I then checked the Task Manager and CPU usages was 22% or less. CPU Benchmark then completed successfully. Once I tried the Update button, saw a message that the request was scheduled, then a message that said communication deferred. Then nothing else. The comment about the profile is starting to make sense to me. When I checked Device Manager, it only shows the two computers that have been running for a while. It has no indication that a new one is running, so no profile has been assigned?? When would the device manager be updated to show this new computer? This computer had the agent running many months ago, but one of the kids uninstalled it. I took over the computer and reinstalled as a fresh download. Is there a pointer to a installing BOINC as a service? Thanks !!! |

Depending on the place you look, the device will show immediately in Device manager when created, or when a result has been returned in the last 14 days. Given this is a reused device (the device number indicates that the BOINC data dir files were cloned) and no result was returned it is currently filtered out (use top page selectors to expand). As noted, there is a profile revision date, so it's assigned to your "default" device profile aka none.
Uninstall BOINC, then reinstall, following this FAQ http://bit.ly/bC88HV, item 4 screenshot series. The Protected Application Execution and Allow All users boxes ensure that Alex too gets access to the BOINC Manager. --//-- |

Found the device when I selected Show all Devices. I have used quite a few systems in the past.
Uninstalled and reinstalled the agent as a service. After the reboot, it came right up, asked for user/pw and took off. Thanks !!!! |

Great, another problem bit the dust. Now plz edit the opening post title and insert [RESOLVED] as I did with this reply, then the next "victim" will know there's a fix to the issue.
