and.....

For those of you that are firmly entrenched in a team already but have a penchant for a challenge.... give this a go! For a period of one week, run everything that you can and invite your friends to do likewise. We want you all to try to beat us biggrin

Re: Xtremesystems Supercomputer Week: May 1-7 2012

Unfortunately external temps are much too high for my war machine. But I will step in with what I have left.

My personal suggestion here: why not move the Supercomputer week to February during Carnival week. In the northern hemisphere you would probably have maximum results. May is already way too hot.

Here are the dates of the Rio Carnival from 2013 to 2030:

Rio Carnival 2013 dates: February 8th until February 12th

Rio Carnival 2014 dates: February 28th until March 4th

Rio Carnival 2015 dates: February 13th until February 17th

Rio Carnival 2016 dates: February 5th until February 9th

Rio Carnival 2017 dates: February 24th until February 28th

Rio Carnival 2018 dates: February 9th until February 13th

Rio Carnival 2019 dates: March 1rd until March 5th

Rio Carnival 2020 dates: February 21st until February 25th

Rio Carnival 2021 dates: February 12th until February 16th

Rio Carnival 2022 dates: February 25th until March 1st

Rio Carnival 2023 dates: February 17th until February 21st

Rio Carnival 2024 dates: February 9th until February 13th

Rio Carnival 2025 dates: February 28th until March 4th

Rio Carnival 2026 dates: February 13th until February 17th

Rio Carnival 2027 dates: February 5th until February 9th

Rio Carnival 2028 dates: February 25th until February 29th

Rio Carnival 2029 dates: February 9th until February 13th

Rio Carnival 2030 dates: March 1st until March 5th

Hot? In Switzerland? Surely you jest.

Since you reference Rio Carnival week perhaps you should be aware that February is the hottest time of year for us south of the Equator (which helps explain some of the Carnival costumes ;) ) and that we run our hardware the same year round, or at least I do here in Australia. Spring and Autumn (Fall to the Yanks) are the most even times of year when you spread it across both hemispheres and it's when SC week usually falls.

Hello,
Unfortunately we tried to find a compromise so that the "down under" guys wouldn't be trying this when the temps are absolutely crazy hot there.
It's not that we have a huge amount of members in the southern hemisphere because the truth is we don't but they are VERY dedicated people and we didn't want to push them out by scheduling when it was 40+C down there.
Sorry to hear it's hot in Switzerland. Even here in NH we had days in the 90'sF a few weeks ago but cooled off some.
Come with one machine if you can.
As I've said before, it isn't the quantity of the machines that matters but the quality of the people involved and that surely applies to you.
The other day I emailed 168,000+ at XS. Did some simple math and if each one brought an old 2006 Intel E6600, the first core2duo's, we would do app 1.76BILLION PPD in WCG..
Unfortunately I won't even get 1% to come for the week and that is the part that frustrates me.
The power is MORE than there but the motivation isn't.
BUT we will do the best we can with the great people we have. biggrin

Have you ever considered having a mini split AC unit installed where your crunchers are located?

Sure nanoprobe. The problem with AC is that you basically spend one kilowatt cooling energy for one kilowatt of crunching power. And the cost of the kWhr where I am is pretty high. So full power when external temps are under 8 degrees Celsius and very little when we reach 25 or more like these last days. Installing forced ventilation is the solution but in my small basement place it is not practical at all. The only solution is to move everything somewhere else. But where? That is the 10'000 $ question. I tried to negociate a solution with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology that is 500 mt from where I live but they have also terrible problems of space and cooling issues. I should move everything in Finland over the arctic circle. I should have no problem the whole year there. smile
