Re: Transport exercises

If by "exercises" you mean "work units" for Human Proteome Folding, then what you want will happen automatically, assuming you are using a laptop computer. Just download and install the grid agent where you do have a connection and it will download the work. While it is processing it, it needs no internet connection. After the work is completed and when you establish an internet connection again, it will automatically return the results and get new work to process.

If you are not using a laptop and want to continue the work on a different computer then you might be able to use a USB key. Some members have installed the agent on a USB key and it will run from there on another computer if you start UD.exe. However, this is not officially supported and may not work in all situations. For example, there might be problems if the drive letters do not match, or if the screen saver tries to run. Furthermore, a USB key has a limited number of writes that it can support before it stops working. So, there are several risks here.

Re: Transport exercises

Answer: I have never done this, but it should not be very hard, as long as you can copy multi-megabyte directories easily. As far as I know, the installation program makes very few changes on your computer. Mainly it installs the WorldCommunityGrid directory in C:/Program Files, installs an uninstall program in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, puts a shortcut to C:/Program Files/WorldCommunityGrid/UD.exe in your Start Menu and adds a screensaver. So all you need to do is Exit from UD.exe on the installed computer, copy the directory WorldCommunityGrid between computers and start UD.exe running on the new computer. When it finishes, Exit from UD.exe on the new computer to stop it from trying to communicate with the server and then copy the directory back to the first computer and start UD.exe running on it.

I am uncertain just when the system requirements are checked on your computer. I expect that it happens when UD.exe first starts running rather than as part of the installation program.

Note that you want UD.exe to NOT run while copying directories. Otherwise you will get an Operating System error since a work file will be in use. This means that you will probably want manual control of UD.exe and remove it from your Start Menu. This means that you will rapidly grow tired of playing with the program.

All things considered, this is certainly technically feasible, but it is just too time-consuming to seem worthwhile except as an experiment. This is sort of the way I feel about Spinach Souffle. tongue

I have just been giving you a list of what needs to be accomplished [not much] and omitting detailed step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish them. There are many different ways that should work.

confused Do you REALLY want to do this?

Best Wishes,
mycrofth

Added: Viktors replied while I was writing a reply. He is right, if you are talking about a laptop you take from office to home at night then there is nothing to it. Otherwise, it starts getting difficult.
