Re: what do you all think of those 'sterile mosquitos' projects?

All animals are important for us to live but we have destroyed their homes... We are reaping what we sow. And this is all because of humanity's destruction of the forest...

Re: what do you all think of those 'sterile mosquitos' projects?

There are a vast number of mosquitoes that are uninterested in humans. I am all in favor of sterilizing screw flies, tsetse flies, and mosquitoes.

Have you read Isaac Asimov's "Foundation series" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_series )? If not, do it :-). Especially "Foundation and Earth" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_and_Earth) in which Asimov describes his view on what might happens with a planet if mankind selects only "good" species.

I hope we (mankind) will find better solution against malaria than to exterminate mosquitos :-)

Cheers and NI!

Hi CandymanWCG,
I agree with you and have asked the staff to move this to Chat. Maybe we can get a free-wheeling discussion going.

Re: what do you all think of those 'sterile mosquitos' projects?

Many thanks, Lawrence!

Yes, it sounds like an interesting discussion, one of which myself have wondered about (e.g. what good are mosquitoes?). I think I will keep watching this thread to see where this goes.

Cheers!

I understand the technique is considered more useful to control the population rather than eradicate.
Speaking of mosquitoes -The Department of Health has been spraying to help prevent West Nile Virus.
Several reported cases to date.

Re: what do you all think of those 'sterile mosquitos' projects?

Thanks SekeRob,
I read that the Asian Longhorn Beetle is a destructive wood borer that infests many hardwood species. Originally from China and Korea, it is now spreading through the USA and Europe.

Lawrence

So happened to pick up, that when it's seen in the Netherlands, it's an all out destruction-removal of all green within 100 meter radius of the shrub/bush/tree the specimen is found in. The hope is to keep it that way in check. We have the Asian/Chinese cockroach, and many of a specific palm type are lost in Italy to this [through exotic plant import] arrived pest. Mind you, the palm they feast on do not belong here either. Lost 1 of 2 in our garden... big shade makers. The trick is as we know now, on first sign to quasi decapitate the palm tree, to remove the food source and surprise surprise, in 6-12 months about 98% of the palms push out a new foliage top... looks weird with the square ends on the leaves :D
