Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Hi,

Angry at whom? BOINC has not been fully tested and adapted to W8, which will be with the next client, no plans to port any fixed back to 6.10 or 6.12. Some members have managed to get BOINC onto the W8 preview, but as yet I'd say: Not yet supported, but surely members having past experience will be happy to share how they succeeded.

Here's a link to a prior W8 preview thread on our forums: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,32673

Well, personally I had no problems installing BOINC v7.0.20 as a service under win8 preview, but apparently trying to not install as service for the benefit of gpu-crunching doesn't work yet. If you need gpu-crunching, a work-around like upgrading a win7-install to win8 will maybe work.

Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview

I had problems as well, and the issue is BOINC client does not recognize Windows 8. To get around that issue I installed 6.12.43 64 bit version and this is I believe NOT supported by WCG. I could not get the WCG supported version to work.

The thread discussing this problem is here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=7346
and contains the 32 and 64 bit versions.

When you are installing BOINC and come to the screen with three checks boxes, and the top box is for the BOINC screen saver, I had the two bottom boxes checked (not the top BOINC screensaver box) and BOINC installed. You will have to go to the "advanced user" mode to get to those boxes.

WCG is running well and I have yet to have any problems.

Good Luck!

Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview

This was posted on the developer mail list as work around
Here's what I did:
1) Copied my "X:\ProgramData\BOINC" directory and my "X:\Program Files\BOINC" directory from my Windows 7 partition to my Windows 8 partition on C:
2) For C:\ProgramData\BOINC, I had to change the permissions, and add "Everyone" to "Full Control"
3) Then, I created a shortcut with
Target: "C:\Program Files\BOINC\boincmgr.exe"
Start in: C:\ProgramData\BOINC

Then, I moved that shortcut to:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp So, when I sign into Windows 8, BOINC Manager runs, and it can connect to the Data directory with no problems!
Thanks again! Rom: If you need anyone to test any fixes for the installer, I'm available.

Boils down to what RaymondFO wrote... an upgrade rather than a clean install. In the thread I linked there is another post to say that 6.12.43, the last 6.12 does have W8 recognition skill. Important is to *not* install with protected application execution if you want to do GPU computing too, now or in the future.

Re: Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Thank you for your help. It works now. It is very important to me. I have participated at those project since 2007. Now I am testing the new system (I run Windows 7 only for updates) all the time. Greetings
