Re: Round 3 - GPU Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer

NVIDIA Cards Not Allowed:

GeForce GT 520M
GeForce GT 520
GeForce GT 420

Why are these particular cards not supported? I have a GT 520, so guess that explains why I never received any WU's ...

Re: Round 3 - GPU Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer

w1hue install the last BOINC , and looks in the messages, the compatibility of your GPU is indicated.
For my 2 examples, GTX295 is ready for the OpenCL 1.0 and compute capability 1.3
12/04/2012 07:58:33 | | NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 295 (driver version 285.62, CUDA version 4.10, compute capability 1.3, 896MB, 825MB available, 894 GFLOPS peak)
12/04/2012 07:58:33 | | NVIDIA GPU 1: GeForce GTX 295 (driver version 285.62, CUDA version 4.10, compute capability 1.3, 896MB, 789MB available, 894 GFLOPS peak)
12/04/2012 07:58:33 | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 295 (driver version 285.62, device version OpenCL 1.0 CUDA, 896MB, 825MB available)

My GTX 570 is compatible with the openCL 1.1 and compute capability 2.0
12/04/2012 11:05:27 | | NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 570 (driver version 285.62, CUDA version 4.10, compute capability 2.0, 1280MB, 1182MB available, 1405 GFLOPS peak)

Your GPU must be compatible minimum OpenCL 1.0 and Compute Capability minimum 1.2

Re: Round 3 - GPU Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer

It was the stuttering that most concerned me about the last round of beta's way back when sometime before my voice broke wink

The GPUGrid WU's don't show this effect

But the WCG Beta made the PC unusable as it seemed to hog all of the GPU (560Ti+1055T+4Gb RAM). My PC is my Telly and it didn't play nicely with Windows Media Centre for the all too brief time it ran.

Fixing this would be well worth pausing for.

Try installing MSI afterburner and use it to down clock the memory on your card and see if that helps.

Re: Round 3 - GPU Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer

Hi Nanoprobe

I have the afterburner it's the MSI card twin frozr in the Mobo and it is unaffected by GPUGrid

Why am I back here - the latest Beta's from WCG have just arrived

How did I know?

Media Centre stuttering .....

The wick needs turning down just a shade otherwise people will abandon the project (the equivalent of the 60% default setting for CPU usage)

I'll have a go with the memory clock and see what happens I expect it will be worse....

Nope no improvement

The GPU beta's turn a 6 core 1055T and a MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II into something way less responsive than an atom powered netbook to the point of trying to position the mouse is a challenge

That's my feedback for what it's worth

Just to re-iterate I don't suffer in the same way at GPUGrid There's no perceivable impact in performance while running the WU's over there

GPUGrid uses 85% of the GPU constantly (leaving 15% for spporting graphics on the PC) WCG is peaking and troughing from 50% to 100%

Re: Round 3 - GPU Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer

6 mins 44 seconds in total to return the WU !

If it took 7 mins 30 seconds I might be able to continue to use the PC

What OS and how much ram do you have? Also have you played with the Boinc settings? There is a setting saying if the pc does not have at least X% of the cpu free pause Boinc, the default is 25%. Try freeing one cpu core by changing the number of cores to use to 99% and see if that helps any. You can also UP the 25% to 30, or more, but do it slowly and use trial and error to find a setting that gives both pc usage and Boinc crunching. There is one more setting you might think about, to NOT use the gpu while the pc is 'in use'. ANY mouse or keyboard movement will pause the gpu and give you back control of your pc, you can then set the resume to crunching time to say 1 minute. ALL these settings are in the Boinc Manager which is down by the clock and accessible thru a right click. Remember if you change anything you MUST click ok to make it work!!
