When did you start DCing?

Just a bit of fun...

While looking for something completely unrelated in my email archive, I came across something that made me smile: My email from SETI@Home, the day I joined my first Distributed Computing project.

The glorious day in question was Friday 16th July, 1999. (My email address - and I assume SETI user ID - back then was tom@proxima.demon.co.uk)

Anyone beat that for a starting date?!

I got to the top 1% (by results returned, I think) on 14th April 2000. I can still remember the heat and noise in that spare bedroom. Since then, I've crunched on United Devices, distributed folding, Find-a-Drug, Rosetta@Home, and onto WCG.

Re: When did you start DCing?

According to Seti I started at December 17, 1999, 10:04 pm, but Seti had a stats loss early on and my specific date and time were lost and LOTS of us were given that date. They lost the specific dates so gave us a date that they KNEW we were crunching, most of us were crunching prior to that though, although I have no idea of the real date anymore. I too have been crunching for alot of projects over the years in between. I currently have 14 pc's crunching for a few projects. I tend to put most of my resources on one project to move my stats up in big chunks instead of slow and steady. I also use gpu's now and have at least one in each of my desktops. this is making my credits SCREAM up higher than I had ever thought possible when I first started!! My name on the rest of Boinc is just plain old mikey. My name is Mike and mikey is a heck of a lot better than some of the other nicknames I have had over the years!

Re: When did you start DCing?

The first time I got in contact with DC was with SETI in April 2008. But I thought my computer was communicating with space, so I sorta freaked out and uninstalled BOINC.
In 2009 I rejoined BOINC and have been mostly at WCG since June 2009.

Re: When did you start DCing?

Think there's already a thread on this, but anyway, *volunteered* Nov.16, 2004 at the wrong grid for the same HPF1 project that was the first major research launched at WCG after a very brief one that had like 7500 tasks, which today at WCG would have lasted 19 minutes to complete.

Re: When did you start DCing?

Looks like quite a few of us switched from Seti to UD when they opened their cancer-crunch in April 2001

Exactly what I did. I wasn't that interested in SETI's science (although I soon got roped into the stats), but I remember thinking that if we could get enough horsepower into SETI, scientists might realise that this could also work for other projects.

When UD started, I couldn't sign up soon enough.

Re: When did you start DCing?

I turned in my first work for RC5-64 on 29-Feb-2000, so I guess I have a leap day anniversary. smile I'd read about Seti years earlier and always liked the idea of using spare cycles, but figured there could be a better application of my cycles. RC5 at least seemed to have a determinable endpoint. It started as something to run in the background, then I started leaving the computer on overnight and while I was at work. Then I realized I could build more and crunch uninterrupted while playing a game on my main pc. It was such a sad spiral and shameless bender of projects - RC5, folding, genome, seti, OGR, distributed folding, find-a-drug, and many others. not talking biggrin

Only in my older and wiser years have I settled down, learning that WCG is (mostly!) where it's at.

As a non-sequitorial addendum - I remember buying my first GeForce video card years and years ago which had an HSF on it which rivaled the one on my Socket 7 processor. I remember thinking, I wonder what it would take to crunch WUs on this guy? Who knew that question would be a very popular one of the WCG forums ~10 years later.
