HI,
I just wanted to know if there was a way or if anybody has been successful in running more than one instance of WCG on thier machine. I have a HP Blade centre at my disposal and would like to make use of it especially since all of the blades have multiple CPUs. I have tried Firedemon but that didnt work and have also tried logging in with different log ins (ie through RDP) but that is cumbersome. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

Hello XtRmSt,
No, the problem is with the grid Agent. Firstly, the synchronization variables are hardcoded, so 2 or more instances of the Agent will interfere with each other. Secondly, to eliminate this problem, there is some code in the Agent to shut down extra instances of the Agent. Therefore, to run more than one instance on a computer, it is necessary to create a virtual machine for a core or processor, using software such as VMware. We intend to develop a new Agent for Linux X86 this year. This will give us a testbed to experiment with. I expect that this will lead to major improvements down the road, but for the short-term, we are just a single-thread Windows application. mycrofth |

So what you are saying is that the other 3 processors in each of my (20) blade servers are just sitting there doing nothing........... Hmm I think I might run 1 instance of WCG, 1 Folding@Home, 1 Seti@Home, and 1 something else per server while WCG catches up with the multithreaded world......... Darn, So my newly ordered Dual Core A64 box wont bring me anymore benefit either. [This post was edited for profanity - nelsoc] [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 7, 2005 12:42:58 PM] |

If this is any consolation, I've been running my dual-core on the WCG project for over a week and even though it shows a relatively low score on the client test (processor score ~165 to 175 for dual core Intel 840 (rated 3.2Ghz) versus processor score ~ 240 to 247 for single core Athlon64 3800+) It is pumping out a slightly greater number of work units per time than the faster single core processor.
I think there may actually be some benefit to running this project via dual core although only slightly. Really too many variables to consider to get a true reading. Certainly not worth running out and getting a dual-core just to run this app. (Like I did! DOH!) On your dual-core when you get it, see if this helps. I found I get almost perceptibly better results if I run the WCGrid_Rosetta.exe process at REALTIME. Other functions of the PC are allowed to occur. |

The only way I can think of running multiple copies of the agent would be to use virtual machines such as from vmware. Each virtual machine looks like a separate machine to the agent. The vendor software is currently not designed to permit use of multiple processors on a single Windows installation.

You can run a second instance of the agent if you are using Win XP outside of a domain using the Fast User Switching feature. Probably no good for your blades but useful for those with dual processors.
I'm not sure if this is documented elsewhere in this forum, but all you need to do is to install a second agent in a seperate directory, modify UD.EXE properties to run in NT Compatibility mode, and then run it (from a seperate account). Works just fine..... Jonathan. |
