Linux/Windows comparison

Hi,

my first machines start to report results back and I noticed that Linux is a lot faster than Windows.

That's what I see on two of my machines (identical hardware):
- Linux (32bit Ubuntu) --> 1h-2h per WU
- Windows (32bit XP) --> 9h-11h per WU

Another machine with Windows Vista 32bit (better hardware) takes about 5h-6h per WU. I need to wait for my other computers for the first results.

Are there big differences between the batches or is Linux really 5x faster than Windows?

Anyone got some kind of benchmark data already?

Re: Linux/Windows comparison

Hi KodeX,
Better specify projects. This is a never-ending topic of conversation. Linux gained an important leg up on Windows when the new 64-bit Linux compilers were released. Until then, Windows often had a small advantage.

Re: Linux/Windows comparison

better check the size of your work units for a true comparison. they are all different sizes at this point...

Re: Linux/Windows comparison

I haven't run C4CW for a while, so I don't know whether this is still true (I hope someone else will comment). Anyway, C4CW used to have very consistent sizes of WUs, so it was a good choice for trying to compare performance of different operating systems or hardware.

Re: Linux/Windows comparison

Well, per techs, the Windows version is a little faster, despite Lawrence's leg-up Linux libraries, and that's in 64 bit compiles. [my dual boot shows a small difference in favor of W7-64]

Re: Linux/Windows comparison

Hi, my average Shistosoma task run time is about 3.3h. I have not processed anything with Linux for months as I got tired of the dual boot thing.
