Hello
----------------------------------------A friend asked me this a while ago: "How can you tell that the software you run does what it says? What if this is CIA hacking other countries secret communications? That needs so much computing power too!" I had no answer to give but: "these are serious people, real scientists, etc." What I'd like is some links to show where the open source community or some audit company says that this software is really folding proteins for the benefit of mankind. I have read this: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,19467 and showed it to my friend too, but something external would be better. Best regards, Rudy [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 23, 2012 10:56:41 AM] |

Hello csicky,
----------------------------------------indeed installing boinc on its hosts requires a minimal level of confidence into the organizations operating the grid platform and supporting the science projects. I am not sure if an external audit would significantly improve the level of confidence since the auditor neutrality could also be put into questions. The awareness about software innocuousness is always important, not only for Boinc or grid computing projects. Do you plan to audit big software editors before you install their operating systems or office suites? Did you audit the editors of the operating system and apps of your mobile phone? Maybe, I am naive and WCG is a "fake" finally working for some background organizations? In all cases, I have a reasonable level of confidence into the involved scientists and into the people operating WCG. If your friends are not willing to trust WCG, they should not participate. Enjoy crunching at WCG and supporting interesting projects for the humanity health and welfare. Cheers, Yves |

The peer review of papers produced by the researches and the, to the science community and anyone else seriously interested, open accessible database products are good external audits I'd think. Also, WCG just hosts external research... all projects are audited even before they're allowed on the grid, IBM's reputation on the line :D
