Captain ‘was trying to salute pal on shore’
The captain of the ill-fated Costa Concordia was delivering a “salute” to a friend on shore when he sailed into disaster, it was claimed on Sunday night. Francesco Schettino, 52, has been arrested on suspicion of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship when the cruise liner ran aground after sustaining a 160ft gash in the port-side hull – leaving at least six dead and 15 missing. .. ![]() Related Stories • Gallery: The sinking of the Concordia • ‘Our 30-hour nightmare in sinking ship’ • Cruise company criticises captain • Cruise ship toll rises to 6 |

It's very sad for the families of the deceased and missing. The Captain's story about hitting a rock some kilometres form the shore is not backed up by the technology, including the GPS logs from the ship's systems, the autopilot alarms and the AIS tracks. (AIS broacasts the ship's position to other vessels and the coastguard.) You can see live AIS tracks here.Clicking on a vessel shows it's name, course and speed.

Many thanks for the link
Indeed should never have happened. Human blunders at heart of ship disaster Over-reliance on electronic navigation systems and a failure of judgement by the captain are seen as possible reasons for one of the worst cruise liner disasters of all time, maritime specialists say. Industry experts say modern passenger ships such as the Costa Concordia, that ran aground off Italy's west coast at the weekend, are equipped with state of the art global positioning systems and collision avoidance radar tracking facilities. Nevertheless, the human dimension is still vital....... |

Yes it is truly a horrible accident! I am not particularly impressed by the actions of the crew from the sources I've heard...

I skippered my own boat for many years. It was not quite the size of Concordia, but most of the dangers at sea were caused by humans, not rocks.
----------------------------------------The press (and 'experts') complaining on reliance of electronic nav-aids is today misplaced: radar, Automatic Identification Systems and depth sonar all can see where the 'MK I Eyeball' cannot. Electronic chart plotters are usually more up to date than paper charts in the nav-locker. Ship autopilots backed by GPS keep ships away from danger and show off-course alarms, like the one for your hiking. The rocks that Captain Schenetti hit are visible on Google Earth and are on all of the sea-charts. It will be interesting to see what the investigation shows. His only good decision was to turn the ship around immediatly, if it was his decision. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hardnews at Jan 18, 2012 9:13:35 AM] |

The latest in this naval 'crime' is that the captain claimed before the magistrate that he 'fell' into the liveboat while helping others. The radio conversation between Concordia's captain and Di Falco, captain of the coastguard vessel is something like
.... Q: Where is your second in command? A: Here Q: What's his name? ... Instruction: Listen, You 2 go back on board and coordinate the rescue and tell us... Did they both fall into the lifeboat? Around 20 still missing. ![]() --//-- |
