Help End Exteme Poverty!

We don't want your money, we want your voice!

Let then leaders of the G8 nations know you want them to raise the bar when it comes to ending extreme poverty in the world.

First:
Add your name to the worldwide petition:http://www.live8live.com/

Then:
In Canada, join the petition and have an email sent to Paul Martin and your local Federal MP:http://www.makepovertyhistory.ca/

In the USA, sign the ONE Declaration and sign a letter to President Bush:http://www.one.org/

LONDON, England -- After the success of Live 8, the largest live concert ever held, politicians said people power could make a difference as Group of Eight (G8) leaders prepared to meet to discuss Africa.

Funny...and the organizers in Barrie Ontario banned the local group for the homeless from collecting canned goods at the entrance to the concert. According to the Globe and Mail Geldorf dennied permission for local charaties to benefit from the concerts. Ahh well.... I will wait for my next 419 EMail scam letter . If Geldorf feels the need ... why doesnt he contribute $$$.

PS tax freedom day in Canada was June 23rd I believe.

It's attitudes like this that cause another child to die from extreme poverty every three seconds and why we are no further ahead on eradicating extreme poverty in the world after more than 30 years of "trying".

Snap...a child has died.

3 seconds.

Snap...another child has died. sad

Snap--how do you think do you think mother nature works. If they sent condoms to Africa Instead of crooked leaders pocketing 15billion dollors. Do you think that was peanuts? they cant help the people in america. Its strange when someone can come here from somewhere else and become wealthy and the ones borne here with all the perks have almost nothing and just complain they want moregiven to them

Re: Help End Exteme Poverty!

I hate to dump on a thread, so please do not take offense Ripcat, your heart is in the right place. However, I have no confidence in anything Hollywood and the music industry has to say. They are always ignorant and misguided. If they truly wanted to help, they would take their multibillions of dollars that they collectively enjoy and put their money where their mouths are.

Forget the fact that every dollar sent to africa is 95 cents donating to evil regimes and the charity "operating costs". We tried to address the real problems once in Somalia, but this world can't stomach the tough choices. Charity is a good buissiness to be in, if you are able to live with exploiting the downtrodden.

Democracy is the only true solution to both world peace and world hunger. It will take another couple of hundred years probably, but until all governments have to answer to their citizens, these problems won't really get better.

go ahead and live in denial if you want to.

Re: Help End Exteme Poverty!

It's not money that they need....

And Somalia did not involve nation building.

Here is a post of mine from another forum:

Dollars(and tears) are not enough. The corrupt governments must be 'coerced' into changing and the people of Africa must take some responsiblity for effecting this change.

The problem is there isn't enough 'coersion' happening and the Africans are too poor, sick and uneducated to effect change.

This is partly the fault of the G8 nations. We sent too much food aid and dollars that went unaccounted for.

Africans have no infrastructure due to the corrupt regimes. They need schools, hospitals, transportation links(roads and railways), government buildings, running water, sewage systems and fair trade practices. They can't build these things bec ause they don't have the knowledge to build them.

(Europe and Japan were easy to rebuild after WWII because all they needed was the money. They already had trade, governments and people trained to rebuild infrastructure.(engineers, skilled trades, doctors, nurses))

Live 8 is all about bringing awareness to people that don't realize that $$$ and food is not enough and to put pressure on the G8 governments to enact policies that will address these issues more effectively. Yes, increase aid but do it responsibly so Africans get the tools they need to survive on their own.

In my opinion 'coersion' can include military intervention if it means we won't have to watch another 30 years of death. They say 30,000 children die every day from extreme poverty. I don't think western military intervention wwill ever cause this many deaths a day. If Iraq was powerless to fight the west I'm sure corrupt regimes in Africa will have an even tougher time against a well planned military intervention. We just need to know that we will have to be prepared build a nation from the ground up when we go in.

On fair trade practices: Africans can't sell their cotton because the USA subsidizes rich American cotton producers. Queen Elisabeth II received 1.2 million dollars in farm subsidies last year and a rich Englishman estimated to be worth more than 13 billion dollars received 1 million dollars in farm subsidies. Britain is trying to get the EU to at least reduce farm subsidies but the French are resisting this.

On nation building: You can't go into a nation with your army and a boatload of food and think things will change. You need to also take teachers, doctors, nurses, engineers, construction tradespeople, farmers, business people, etc. You will need teach the Africans and show them what to do. You will have to build schools(kindergarten to universities), hospitals, power generating plants, water treatment facilities, sewage plants, roads, railways, industry etc. The poorest nations have virtually NO infrastructure. But the most important thing anyone can help the poorest Africans build is PRIDE so they don't ever let anyone, ever again, take away what they would now have.

And yes, this would probably take as many as 20 years but every year it would get easier.

Re: Help End Exteme Poverty!

Well, we built an infrastructure in somalia and they stripped the buildings of their raw materials. The problem can only be solved through violence, sorry, but i believe history has shown this to be true. Step one is the violent removal of the warlords. until the world has the stomach for that, nothing will change.

I think you have to step back and look at the international big picture. Every democracy we establish in acheivable areas like Iraq and Afghanistan the closer we get to helping nations like those in Africa. Money and food and infrastructure sent to africa just stgrengthens the warlords grip.

I kills me that the same hypocrits in entertainment industry codemn our efforts in Iraq are now saying we should take on a much bigger and less acheivable task like in Africa.

we can not save everyone overnight, we must prioritize what we can and can't do.

honestly, if those morons in hollywood support it you know it has to be wrong.
