While I'm happy for finman, I sure do miss Dave.

I know what you mean. When I was over on Youtube at the beginning of the week, I ended up coming across Dave's stuff there. It was different watching his WCG video this time.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 55 smilesmile

I've been playing around with version 7.0.8. From what I can make of the new settings I think they work something like this. The CE connect every setting will give that amount of cache and the AB additional buffer tells the client when to reload to the CE setting.
An example would be a CE setting of 1 day and a AB setting of .50 days.
You would get a 1 day cache of work that will be refilled when the cache level reaches a .50 day supply. thinking

@RT- Hope all goes well with your surgery. With my knees I'm sure that will be my destiny too some day.

nano, thinking about this change with BOINC 7 makes my head hurt. The more I think about it the more I think the implications are going to be surprising. The current "Connect every" will change to "Min work buffer". Currently, some folks with stable connections (dsl, cable modem, etc.) that are always connected to the net (at least when the machine is on) have a CE of 0 in their profile. That maximizes the frequency with which the machine contacts the the server for work. That can be handy on a project like DDDT2 where you use the update button to load some amount of work for other projects to keep your machine crunching and then set to to a DDDT2-project-only profile. When DDDT2 work does become available, this maximizes the odds of your machine getting some number of tasks and continuing to get tasks via repeated connections to the server until you have your work buffer full. By my thinking, with BOINC 7, BOINC will NOT contact the server for more work UNTIL you have less than the "min work buffer" amount on your machine. This is why a current CE value of 0 will be a problem. If you don't adjust these two values appropriately when going to BOINC 7, a "min work buffer" of 0 means that your machine will not contact the server for more work until it is completely out of work. Some of the interesting implications that I see are that when a project server sends you work, you don't always get enough work to completely fill your work queue on that first request. If you get enough work to take your machine above the "min work buffer" amount, you won't get any more work until it gets back down below it again. Yes, you have the "max additional work buffer" value but I think that means that when your queue gets below the minimum value, BOINC will request work from the server that could be as much as the minimum + max additional but not necessarily. If it doesn't get enough to be above the minimum, BOINC will request again once the "communications deferred" timer reaches zero but any amount of work that takes you over the minimum will end requests to the server regardless of whether it reaches the max or not. Since the decision about when to ask for work is based on the total of the Time to Completion for the tasks you have divided by the number of cores you have, the accuracy of the TTC value is going to be more important than at present. Projects that send badly inaccurate estimates with the WUs will impact users one way or another depending on the nature of their bad estimate. Tasks from a batch of work that just happens to be anomalous could have the same impact. Also, is the number of cores that BOINC sees on your machine the same that you think it is? If you have four cores but run eight tasks at a time, will you have to adjust your settings to account for that? Projects like CEP2 where you may only get WUs one at a time (unless you set differently) could mean that your max additional work value is effectively meaningless to the extent you crunch just projects like that. I think we're going to end up having to take into account the specific nature of the projects we're crunching when we set these values in BOINC 7 and perhaps change them whenever the mix of projects we're crunching on changes. The less homogeneous your set of projects are, the more complicated deciding what to set these values to could get.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 55 smilesmile

For years I have been fighting cancer for everyone.

Next week, I will be doing it for myself. If you see my numbers going down it will be because I will not have access to my machines.

So if something appends they will have to wait until I get back on my feet.
I don’t intend to rejoin our friend Dave Bell.

I am a little worried because I asked about my surgeon to find if he was good. Twice I was told he has lots of experience! crying

Not much of a referral. It like being told he is the best in the village. confused

I will come back in a week or so.

Rej, thanks for letting us know. Actually, lots of experience can be a very good recommendation. My research has found that the advice is, when you are having a given surgical procedure or are being treated for a specific condition, you have the best outcomes when your doctor "specializes" in your procedure/condition. The more times a surgeon has done a given procedure, the more experience that they have had with it and the "surprises" that can arise. They are better prepared to address your specific situation when you're "on the table" because they are much more familiar with what they can come across. When I had my nose and throat "re-plumbed" to address my sleep apnea, the ENT I went to only treated sleep disorders. He had done the procedures I needed several thousand times. Surgeons will tell you that there's a risk that you could need a transfusion during the surgery, that that's a risk of any surgery. They're right but this doc said that and added that he actually had had one patient where that had actually happened (they were more at risk for that it seems which is why he did their procedure in the hospital versus out-patient in my case). He did my nose in an hour and, two weeks later, took two hours to do my throat. I didn't take a single pain pill when he did my nose - didn't need any. Outcome was great and I sleep much better. When the eye specialist here in town was concerned about what he saw in my wife's eye (possible melenoma), he sent us to what he called the experts in the US. Turned out they (husband and wife pair) had literally written the textbooks on treating ocular cancer. They not only determined what was really going on in my wife's case but were able to explain things in GREAT detail and quite thoroughly. So yes, experience is a good thing. It is scary when it's personal like this but I think you will do well. Reccomendations from doctors (and especially nurses - they know a lot about who the good doctors are so a lukewarm opinion of a doc is usually a good sign to keep looking) are usually good, especially in response to you asking them who they would see if they had your condition. Docs know each other too. Even then though, no matter how good they are, they're not the best one for you if you're not comfortable with them. I'll be watching for you to post when you're back and to hear that you're going to be fine!
