This is a newbie question, but i did search and could find no clue.
i've only joined this a few days ago, and credits start coming in so not everything is completely wrong. but in my BOINC manager app > tasks view i see one entry (for CEP 2) where the status column says "Download failed". I have completed one work unit for CEP, as per my results overview. then one failed just like this one, and i got impatient and just aborted that one. But those aborts looks ugly in my results overview, so this time i try to do a better job, but i seem to need help. In transfers view, i see no messages at all so i have no idea what happened. i've checked my machine's console application (os x 10.6.8) and found no log entry obviously relating to BOINC or download worries. my ISP has a habit of cutting and reconnecting phone lines every 24hrs but that is not normally a big deal since most downloaders seem to just resume after the reconnect. My questions are: a) will that non-task just sit there until deadline (some time in Jan)? or is there something i can meaningfully do to make my machine work for CEP over xmas? Can re-downloads somehow be forced? b) is there a chance that this line reset by my ISP effectively keeps me from handling the rather large work units in CEP? thanks, Mats |

Hi Mats,
Welcome to the World Community Grid Forums - glad to have a new cruncher join our ranks. Most operation is automatic. Basically don't worry about what you did. a) If the non-task is not missing a file, just don't worry about it. Someone else is right now probably crunching the task you just aborted. The server is aware of when task are aborted resulting in sending an "emergency" task to someone else to do and this has no harmful effect on you or the system at all. If non-task is missing a file, then everyone else will have the same problem and the task itself will ultimately fail and someone will notice this and address the problem. b) I don't know the inner workings of BOINC but generally if your client's download has been interrupted by the ISP reset, it will try downloading again and should get it the second time. Or it will just report an error back to the server and the server will know what to do. You should have no problem running CEP assuming that your computer meets the requirement for running CEP tasks. If the problem resurfaces on a new task, it would be helpful if you post the entire message log file here and a more knowledgeable person will be able to help you with your concern. Crunch away... Hi Mats,
welcome to CEP2 and thank you for crunching our project. If you want to use the Xmas break to tinker with your WCG settings, you should check out our Tips-and-Tricks sheet for custom settings (see link in the footer). Best wishes Your Harvard CEP team |

FWIW: it just happened again: download, instant error, task dead.
config: i was on 6.12.35 for Mac and saw no messages whatever, so i fell back to 6.10.58 (which is what runs and shows messages on that other machine.) both my computes sit behind the same phone line so whatever fails at my end is machine specific. or else it doesn't fail at my end (purely theoretical case, of course). i see these two lines Sun Dec 25 14:19:55 2011 World Community Grid [error] File wcgrid_cep2_qchem_6.40_i686-apple-darwin has wrong size: expected 79930052, got 2957877 Sun Dec 25 14:19:55 2011 World Community Grid [error] Checksum or signature error for wcgrid_cep2_qchem_6.40_i686-apple-darwin i'll go check the settings as indicated and report back. mats |

hello team,
thanks for highlighting those settings recommendations. i had a quick scan now and i feel reassured that none of those caused the broken file size. according to system profiler, my java settings seem to be fairly recent, the javaVM is from 11/11/11 and confesses to being version tag 13.6, whatever that may mean. one of the last java updates killed my ability to read jar files, but i don't really know why i mention that: reaching for straws, probably. so, as for now, i would if i could but i can't. somebody else is enjoying the ride, so in an sense nothing is lost. mats |

i see these two lines I know those lines too well. Here is what my AMD Hexacore (8 GB RAM, working exclusively WCG and GPUGrid) gets:Sun Dec 25 14:19:55 2011 World Community Grid [error] File wcgrid_cep2_qchem_6.40_i686-apple-darwin has wrong size: expected 79930052, got 2957877 Sun Dec 25 14:19:55 2011 World Community Grid [error] Checksum or signature error for wcgrid_cep2_qchem_6.40_i686-apple-darwin So 25 Dez 2011 16:36:52 CET | World Community Grid | Finished download of wcgrid_cep2_6.40_i686-pc-linux-gnu So 25 Dez 2011 16:36:52 CET | World Community Grid | [error] File wcgrid_cep2_6.40_i686-pc-linux-gnu has wrong size: expected 1308060, got 926096 So 25 Dez 2011 16:36:52 CET | World Community Grid | [error] Checksum or signature error for wcgrid_cep2_6.40_i686-pc-linux-gnu With Win7 64-bit there was no problem running CEP2 on this machine. Since it runs with Linux Ubuntu no WU can be downloaded. (I had converted another PC from Win7 64bit to Ubuntu 64bit, and it's running CEP2 with no problems. So the new OS isn't the bad boy.) ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

Maybe the IBM-WCG team can chime in on this one when they are back from their well deserved winter break... We don't know where this may be coming from - sorry.

MatsWolpers can you tell us a little more about your phone line and how it is connected to your internet provider. I understand you have two pcs connected. Can you test your connection using the test application on the following site:
