confused Hit Rate Decrypthon

The Decrypthon team is the largest of all teams in terms of members. When looking back at the team I mean the historical track record, I saw that over 8'000 members registered but never returned a single result. They never left the team either. That's about 40% of the total team size in terms of members. I was wondering why.

Hi Hypernova!
Please see a short discussion (6 posts) which starts there and explains the reasons of this situation.
Nothing much new since then, except that many more members stopped contributing**, probably for various reasons like -
- getting bored
- re-installing or replacing PCs and forgetting to re-install WCG
- environmental considerations taking precedence over the potential benefits of WCG
- etc...

Despite the disappointment that it can raise I consider this situation as interesting because the few mass mailings which brought the total number of member registrations at this high level were precisely aiming at people that WCG is addressing, i.e. "normal" PC users which are simply willing to offer their computer's spare time for helping useful research, not geeks or distributed computing competitors. smile

If WCG knows from the Decrypthon project team how many people have been sent the original mass mailings they can then know -
- how many have been curious enough to make the initial registration and look for additional information
- how many have passed this step and successfully installed the client
- at which pace attrition is making this population shrink.

However things are not as sad as they may look like. Although the last 12 months have not seen any mass recruitment for our team and worse, despite the long interrupt of HCMD2 work distribution, the Decrypthon team has still seen -
- 858 new Decrypthon/WCG registrations
- 430 new real contributors.
They have not been enough to compensate attrition and the total number of active contributors (having returned results during the last 30 days) has shrinked from 4,192 to 3,029, i.e. a net loss of 1,163 active contributors over these 12 months.
But this is still much better than all Facebook- or Twitter-something teams altogether. smile

** There were still 6,083 active contributors at that time...

Re: Hit Rate Decrypthon

Thanks JmBoullier for your detailed answer.
I didn't know that you had proceeded by mass mailings. I would say then that your hit rate in terms of registration is not so bad. The challenge is first to have the registered members to do effective work that is to return a few results and second to to stay as long as possible. And what your statistics show is that it is not an easy thing.

I think that the chances that one stays for some time increases dramatically once they have returned some results and got points credited. To increase the chances of having some work returned, the WCG/Boinc application must install and run without trouble immediately.
If not so then 95% will simply de-install or just forget it, and 5% will try to understand why it does not work, go on the forums, ask for help and find solutions.

There is another element which is important for a newcomer. This happens once they realise that climbing in the statistics or collecting badges is hard and needs to crunch for longer periods, then they may get disappointed. There are no quick gains, you must last over time.
I was myself surprised too when I started with one machine (albeit powerful). This is very true if you have a small machine which crunches WCG from time to time as screen-saver. This is why I consider the participation badge as having a very positive psychological effect. After having validated one unit (and this can take some days) you are recognized and visible, and so you may feel more motivated instead of disappointed.

A few like me will go bananas and build a "supercomputer" laughing

Re: Hit Rate Decrypthon

Indeed, some years ago, a lot of people discovered WCG because of the French Téléthon and of the Décrypthon project.
Surely many people were just curious and did not really contribute.
Anyway such kind of "evangelism" is useful.
For my-self, I would like to be able to motivate more pupils and students since not only the contribution is useful but also the perspectives offered by biological computational science for future professional works.
In particular in France, year after year, the interest for sciences is decreasing significantly. I think that involvement in grid computing projects could help a little bit young people to consider all kind of opportunities offered by scientific research.

Re: Hit Rate Decrypthon

My own situation, i make a mistake when i created my count and make a double with two different nickname. The twice are still in action (i received the mailing list for the twice count) one with zero point and one with my real work. anyway my computer is working a lot of day.

Yves, just imagine if every youngster with a computer discovers that beside playing games and scouring the internet, their computer can also do work useful for humanity without impacting whatever they do. shock
There would be tens of millions of devices on WCG projects. smile
