I had to reinstall my Windows OS. I once again installed the BOINC Agent software but listed the name of this laptop a little differently than previously, thus losing the time I accumulated before the OS reinstall.
I cannot find a way to edit the name of this computer, to give it the exact same name it had before. Is it possible to change the device name, or possibly transfer the previous work done on this computer before I reinstalled the OS? It's not that big of a deal. If I can recover the work done that's OK but if not that's OK also. It just seems that there should be a simple way to edit the device name. |

Hi C.B.
The rename of a device name with BOINC is done on your computer in the network controls. As soon as you've restarted the computer and the client has connected to the server, will the new name take effect. All tasks assigned and completed by the client that you see on the Result Status page will also show the new name. For W7 it's rather simple. Open the start menu and type in the search box "computer name" without the quotes. In my language there's an option then getting listen "how to change the name of your computer". Follow that. If the servers recognized the computer after the reinstall, it will just have renamed the device. In My Grid > My Statistics > Device Statistics you can see the devices that the system knows. If the servers did not recognize the old device by new name, then unfortunately there is no merge ability to get old and new contributions to show under the same device name. --//-- |

If you want to keep your device ID (and not to create a new one) and to transfer your work from old system to the new one, you have to copy the folder containing BOINC workunits from the old system to the new one.
----------------------------------------For different systems this folder is located in different places Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC\ Windows Vista/Windows 7: C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ Just install BOINC for the first time on the new system but do not enter any username/password. Then delete the newly created folder with the BOINC data and copy the old folder in the same location. I did this several times and always worked perfectly. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by katoda at Dec 13, 2011 3:00:43 PM] |

Good advice, but regrettably, that point seems to have passed for no return. A new BOINC install is best performed *after* restoring the data dir, then installing, pointing the program in the advanced section to the location where the data dir is. This ensures that permissions and properties are refreshed. Your method could lead to permission/ownership bits being incorrectly set.
----------------------------------------I keep a copy of the installs on a separate drive, so I can always go and restore, albeit, the out of sync will cause BOINC to wipe everything in old tasks and fetches new ones. So far my laptop has gone over 5 years under 1 ID, with upgrade from XP to Vista to W7. --//-- P.S. When the installer finds pre-existing data, it wont ask to sign up with WCG again. edit. spell [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 13, 2011 3:36:38 PM] |

In Win7(don't know if it's the same for 2000 and XP) the ProgramData file you need to copy is hidden by default. You'll need to set windows to show hidden files and folders to access it.
