Re: Using only 5 out of 8 CPUs?

My current computer uses about 300 on idle, about 450 on CPU full,

Ken. these values you gave us seem extremely high. 300 Watt idle is more than my rig that uses 280 Watts running full power on Boinc with a 980X hexacore overclocked to 4.0 GHz. I agree that my rig has no double GPU cards, just a basic (passive cooling) video card. But even two GPU cards at idle should not impact too much.

I wonder what kind of computer you are using.

Re: Using only 5 out of 8 CPUs?

Those are real measurements with a power consumption meter. I don't know if it's Power factor corrected though.

I'm using an older first generation C2D, 5 Hard drives (4 magnetic, 1 solid state), 2 4850 video cards, and a truckload of cooling.

When you consider that very few computers will run on less than a 500W power supply, I think you'd be surprised at what a computer can consume. Don't forget the numbers that manufacturers supply you, is what the component consumes at the entry point of the device. A 135W TDP CPU is likely to consume 160W+ from the wall due to conversion inefficiencies.

Re: Using only 5 out of 8 CPUs?

Ken. the 280 watts I am talking about are measured at the wall socket with a power meter. It has nothing to do with supplier specs. All my rigs are assembled by myself. I have carefully selected every component, from casing, motherboard air/water cooling ect..
I have latest generation motherboard and memory, only one 10'000 rpm HDD 300 GB, Gold rated 850 Watts power supply, simple passive cooled video card etc... my rigs are designed to run only Boinc WCG and nothing else. smile
