rose WCG and Networked Computers

I have 3 friends that have stopped running wcg because it freezes their networked computers. Is this a known bug or is there a fix for it? Anything I can tell them? The only similarities seems to be that they are all running their computers in a network from win 98 to xp and all of them experience freezes and an inability to connect to the internet.

Thanks.

Re: WCG and Networked Computers

More likely a hardware/cooling issue than anything to do with networking

Re: WCG and Networked Computers

Interesting. I am tempted to say that something else is probably causing the problem, but I would like to get more information, Security programs can stop the WCG Agent from installing or running, but I cannot remember the Agent causing a computer to freeze up.

Does this problem repeat after an uninstall / reboot / reinstall ?

mmm, maybe check for the ip configuration, and change it (dinamyc o static schema). under w98 check the video hardware, this is the common problem.

Only one has tried that and as soon as she networked her computers, the problem happened again.

Re: WCG and Networked Computers

mycrofth ... but I would like to get more information,

I have experienced problems with microsft networks, but I strongly advise you to follow up on mycrofth's recomendation. This has helped me resove my problems in the past. Here is a check lit of information that will be usefull:

0. check for minimum system requirements
1) Intel Pentiumâ„¢ processor or equivalent
2) At least 128 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled)
3) 600 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 30 MB available for use
4) The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
5) An Internet connection with minimum 40 kb speed
6) Operating System: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP

1. PCs (if minimum requirements, then move on - otherwise - it won't work)
type (processor, model)
memory (size)
disc space available
windows version (plus service pack info)
antivirus - name and version
firewall - name and version
other memory resident programs similar to the wcg agent running - names and versions
do the PCs ever hang up under other circumstances

2. network config
type
IP numbers of network

3. Internet access
type
IP number
which of the PCs controls the Internet access(if applicable)
additional configuration (hubs, printers, scanners etc)
firewall / anitvirus at network level (if applicable)

This will give a general level of info and then experts will be able to narrow down the search so that it is more precise and relevant to the configuration. May sound like a lot of work, but it isn't really as there are a lot of good guys on wcg who certainly know what they are doing - I am not the expert by far, but have had some good experience here on wcg when it comes to asking for help wink

Re: WCG and Networked Computers

When you say it "freezes" the computers. Does this mean it has crashed to the point where the mouse does not move and ctrl-alt-del does not respond and let you bring up task manager?

One thing to try would be to increase the maximum paging file size by 200mb or more and see what happens. Perhaps something is running out of virtual memory.
