"So what I am saying, is that even though WCG may loss the ability to contact anonymous users, they will get a lot more people to start crunching if it is easier to start (yes I know it is pretty easy as is)"
I agree. |

I have to admit I agree with the points that were stated in "http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost_post,265934". But when I talk to my coworkers about running WCG on there system the were like "sure, that sounds great" until we get to the registration page. Then they are like "I will do it later". But as soon as I say, they can just go to our internal website and download the same program but don't have to register and it goes toward the IBM group, they would download it right away. So what I am saying, is that even though WCG may loss the ability to contact anonymous users, they will get a lot more people to start crunching if it is easier to start (yes I know it is pretty easy as is) 71% of the people quite even after the email was sent and how productive were the other 29%. Did they just produce a few results and quit again? In my opinion the lowest barrier for entry is preferable. I have login fatigue myself. I find myself bypassing things because I have to create yet another account. Another thing to keep track of and potentially be hacked. |

My request is this: allow people to use WCG without registering. Some people will see they first must register, and be deterred to continue, or not want to have to fill stuff out. Making it easier for people to participate in WCG is obviously a good thing. Having a one click way of getting the software would probably make less possible users close the tab (some may now, because of filling stuff out (obviously I am not saying it is difficult, but to some entering some stuff is too taxing)). In 2012 we'll be looking at streamlining the registration process. This includes looking at anonymous participation and express registration. At the present time we are monitoring the effects and retention of people who participate anonymously under the following two programs: (1) Anonymous participation by IBM people - this is being tested internal to IBM .... keep an eye on member "IBM".... lots of devices. (2) Sony VAIO anonymous participation - Sony has preloaded World Community Grid in all VAIOs sold in the USA as a pilot program. Keep an eye on member "Sony VAIO Team"... also has lots of devices. A downside may be that none of these people can check their stats or participate in the forums. Thanks for your interest. |

Hello! Here is the thought; why not to use java based browser mining. Place it on any webpage and visitors will share their resources without registration. Plus limitless possibilities...

In 2012 we'll be looking at streamlining the registration process. This includes looking at anonymous participation and express registration. And how is that going? Because that's the latest mention I can find of this. "IBM" and Vaio" are big contributors but there is no anonymous download. It's appalling that there's still this arbitrary obstacle to contributing to something like this. It should be one click to install and run. Of course, nobody ever complains because unregistered users can't complain, they just close the page. |

Hello friends,
I want to say I support the idea. It seems to me, that this could be part of a WCG website update. You could call the new procedure "BOINC direct download" A button you click on, then the the text "Attention, you have chosen BOINC direct download. You are going to download BOINC, but you will not have a Worldcommunitygrid account. You will not get points or badges, statistics will not be available. You will contribute totally anonymously and not leave a trace. Whatsovever, your contribution is most welcome. Click below to continue" Have a nice day, all the best to everyone Martin |

You could call the new procedure "BOINC direct download" In a perfect world that might work... this is far from a perfect world.1) One month later when they have forgotten what they did, they will go into panic mode because they found a virus on their machine that is mining crypto currency (the horror !!!). 2) I really don't remember how many fields have to be filled out on registration, but I really don't think it's that many to be excessive. 3) If somebody doesn't have the patience to register, they most certainly won't have the patience to select projects to crunch (and won't stay around to see the results). 4) If they want to be anonymous and hide from the NSA, that is possible (thanks to GPA). They can send a note to the admins requesting to be anonymous (there are various crunchers which have done this) My two cents worth, luck to all. Hi cjslman,
----------------------------------------+1 I could not write it better ! I would just add a #5: 5) People asking later to be formally granted of their already performed contribution since "it is so cool to have some badges!" ... If you see how often people ask for the ability to merge devices, I would expect to see similar requests from people participating without registration but willing afterwards to be formally granted. I think (it is just my 2-cent opinion) that WCG does not need to support such a feature like participating without registration. Cheers, Yves |

Registering as "Former Member" could get confusing.
