Anyone recently got the a W520 from leveno as their new laptop at work (ibm)? I recently got one, and the crunching performance is terrible. It takes 6 hrs to finish a HCC WU, estimated 20 hrs for a FAAH WU, and 30 hrs to finish a DSFL WU. The processor is i7-2720QM CPU @ 2.2 GHz with 8 GB of memory.
----------------------------------------It asked for a lot more points then it deserves too (83 boinc pts for a HCC WU (about 3x normal)) |

Is that running with or without the battery in?, as I've just recently discovered that for my Lenovo T410, WITHOUT the battery in, it goes approximately TWICE AS SLOW!!!!
----------------------------------------The same may be happening with yours (the cure, is a higher spec mains lead adaptor). |

Does task manager show the project processes getting CPU time?
My first reaction is to wonder what else is running on the machine. |

yes, it is getting CPU time, since it claimed about 5.5 hrs of work for several HCC WUs. Not much else is running on it right now, because I haven't had the chance to fully setup the system.
----------------------------------------P.S. it is running windows 7 |

Well, I'd blame Lenovo for forgetting how to build your laptops but...
Maybe there's something competing with it? CPU/Memory wise? Maybe Big Blue is metamorphing into Big Brother and installing things in your Win7 image? I run Win7 on my home crunchers and they crunch without issue, but when you start getting into a corporate image, it's hard to say what the reason is. |

In addition to performance I am curious about temperature of the cores, do you have any problems with temperature when running for extended periods?
----------------------------------------I am in the market looking for an i7 laptop, that is the reason why I have questions about performance and temp. BOINC has an add-in that will monitor the core temperature and throttle back if it hits the preset. I mention the add-in because it may be useful to me if temp is an issue. One last area that I would check is the system/application logs to see if there are any clues.

i am not sure about the add-in temperature monitor, but the laptop is very cool. Can you point me to where this is?

Go into the Lenovo Power Manager and first set it to Advanced View, then set it to Maximum performance or Power Source Optimised.
All Lenovo's do this. They run the cpu as low as they can go unless you over ride the power settings. Now that being said, I recommend NOT running it full out unless you can find a utility to increase the fan speed. Like this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol/ We have had several cpu fans burn out. The fans never seem to ramp up high enough to cool itself and it literally cooks the cpu fan. I work with Lenovo's all day and I have to say, they are not my favorite brand. |
