BOINC: "HTTP error 0" & Temporary Workaround

As of client 6.12.34 ** more frequent reports have arrived of the inability to connect to the WCG project servers to fetch or upload work, that is to say that a connection is made, but no response is received back. A sample sequence as shown in the message/even log of the client:
14/09/2011 8.32.31 | World Community Grid | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
14/09/2011 8.32.31 | World Community Grid | Not reporting or requesting tasks
14/09/2011 8.32.35 | World Community Grid | Scheduler request failed: HTTP error 0
This is possibly co-caused by a firewall or proxy. Items to check is to confirm that ports 80, 443 and 8080 ***, are specifically set to communicate outwards.

If this error is encountered and no relieve is found, than revert to client 6.12.33 (present default on Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10) or the IBM code audited 6.10.58 i.e. the officially endorsed version as found on the download page of World Community Grid.

** Clients 6.12.34 through 6.12.41 and development clients 6.13 are confirmed to suffer this bug.

*** 8080 is used by web-proxies and caching servers and in past was found to work for those using proxy software.
