When I look at the new Intel 10 Core Xeon E7 CPU I wondered what about my Intel 980X farm.
----------------------------------------The new fastest 10 Core Xeons come at about 4'200 US$ each. They run at 2.4 Ghz, and you cannot overclock them. My 980X six core went at about 1'000 US$. And I run them at 4.0 Ghz and even at 4.2 Ghz routinely, and I use faster RAM (2000 MHz) when the XEON tops at 1333 Mhz. Now let's compare 6 cores X 4.0 Ghz = 24 Ghz. 10 core X 2.4 Ghz = 24 Ghz. Interesting isn't it. TDP are same for both at 130W. The architecture of the E7 is more efficient. So we can suppose that in terms of overall performance the Xeon is a little better but it is not sure that this translates into significant results for the Boinc/WCG software under W7. In terms of points/cpu$ the 980X remains unbeatable against the Xeons. You can have a 55-60k machine on a fast 980X with the right project. That translates to about 55 points/cpu$. The Xeon would be at 15/cpu$ I do not know how the 2600K overclocked would rate. The Intel 980X was put on the market on Q1 2010. We are now on Q4 2011 and it is still the top and probably will stay so at least another year. I do not see any equivalent octo-cores coming in the near future. The 990X and 995X are pale clones with a little faster stock clocks but this does not change the fact that a good 980X can run at 4.0 Ghz on air cooling and without dramatic additional energy consumption. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Oct 3, 2011 11:30:29 AM] |

The Intel 980X was put on the market on Q1 2010. We are now on Q4 2011 and it is still the top and probably will stay so at least another year. Perhaps for a couple of months, but that's it."When it will be released, about two months away from now, the Core i7-3960X, will become Intel's most powerful desktop processor." http://news.softpedia.com/news/Intel-Core-i7-...hinese-Store-222309.shtml These will be faster clock-for-clock than present SB processors and will use Quad-channel DDR3-1600. They will also be unlocked, so expect these 6core/12thread processors to outperform the i7-980. Doesn't mean an i7-980 will suddenly be NVG, just that these will be faster. I would also expect an 8 core version within a year and perhaps a 10 or 12 core version before 2013. While Ivy Bridge will be released within a year it more mainstream so might not reach the heights of the i7-980 and the Haswell probably won't turn up for more than a year. |

"When it will be released, about two months away from now, the Core i7-3960X, will become Intel's most powerful desktop processor." Probably, but I really wonder by which margin compared to the 980X, and will it overclock so well. Wait and see........ ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Oct 3, 2011 1:55:22 PM] |

"According to Intel's data, the 3960X is 12-15% quicker than the 990X in Cinebench, POV-Ray, and ProShow Gold. That gap is even larger when comparing their performance in SPEC CPU2006 and Sandra's multimedia and memory bandwidth tests. In the former, the 3960X achieves 34% more integer performance and 64% better floating point results, while it offers double the speed in both Sandra benchmarks".
http://www.techspot.com/news/44797-sandy-brid...mance-revealed-early.html Nice numbers but the initial cost of a Core i7-3960X system would be massive. Not much chance of me buying one in the next year. |

I wonder if SB-E will offer any hex cores with a 95 watt TPD.

In the Xeon line i'm sure Intel will offer chips with a wide variety of TDP, probably a 60/95/130/150 and maybe a 45 although that one may be tough.
----------------------------------------And Hypernova, for your 980x's to be "fighting" I think they would have to be powered on and crunching WUs You also forgot clock for clock SB architecture produces about 15% more than Nahalem. the SB-E 3930K (I think I got the name right ) looks like a winner for a dedicated cruncher I think. A little expensive at about $600 per CPU but with an OK mb for $200 - $250 and OK cooling that should be a Sandybridge arch Hexa that can easily crunch about 4.4 or 4.5Ghz. There will be some monsters, like dual socket 2011 Octo-cores but for the price the 3930K ought to be a winner.![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by trn-XS at Oct 3, 2011 10:16:19 PM] |

When I measured the actual draw on an i7-2600 it was around 66W (IIRC). That's at 3.5GHz+, crunching all threads on. So the choicest Xeon (S) from the latest SB designs, at 2.4GHz might make the cut to a 45W TDP.
Even 66Wx2.4/3.5=45W, so the new designs should improve that, and cover the more demanding benchmarks, which usually push the TDP to the max, and sometimes then some. |
