Keith...why do you dread Thursday ![]() One year ago Thursday, we lost Dave. So sad I have messages from him in email and twitter---i knew what thursday meant when you mentioned it. it's funny how certain people just get in your heart. i never met dave in person (I missed a chance in 2006 by about an hour because of a flight conflict). however, he seemed to exude a sense of peace and love that drew me to him. during the dark days (at least that's how i refer to the time when our team seemed on the verge of dissolving) i left the team. i decided it really didn't matter if i was part of a team, it was the crunching that mattered. i kept crunching and spent some time with a couple of other teams. then i got the email from dave. it wasn't a "come back" email. it was just a "how are you doing" email. it was like i felt his heart in the email. i came back the next day and the only days i've missed crunching for this team since then was during a short trek with the US Air Force team. i started loaning money through KIVA because he suggested it (if you don't already belong to this project, we have a MyOnlineTeam group at kiva.org). For a guy i never met, he sure impacted my life. even when i got the fancy graphic for my sig, i left the tribute to dave on my sig. I miss him every day and i smile everytime i see his "Good Morning" on RT's posts. In Memory of Dave Bell |

Congratulations to GeraldRube, David Autumns and Pramodp on new milestones !!! See dKt closing on 10,000,000 and Mechqnical on 1,000,000! Way to go and MOT! Have a great evening. New computer is most of the way complete. Did have some thermal grease drop in CPU receptacle. Ignore, use ETOH to clean out or throw MB out and CPU and start over? Thanks in advance.

If you don't have the time to clean the CPU socket carefully, then you should probably replace the board. If the socket is not cleaned well enough, the CPU can be damaged. A google search for "thermal grease in cpu socket" will result in several detailed cleaning procedures. Be careful to read about cleaning the socket and not the much simpler case where the grease is on the CPU pins. Ignoring the grease is almost certain to cause problems.

Good Morning MOT Congratulations GeraldRube, David Autumns and pramodp! I have never dropped thermal paste/grease into a CPU socket. I would be super careful about cleaning it. I don't know what kind of Processor (knowing you, it is not a 486 ) you are going to use but that could get expensive in a hurry. I did that same search and there is some really bad advice out there. I am no expert but some of that is just garbage. I am not sure what I would do but I would start with a vacuum first, rubbing alcohol, Q tips, a big magnifying glass and compressed air. Only if I were sure that I got it really clean would I bet my processor on it. Everyone have a great day and Thank You for contributing to the WCG |
