I've just joined the World Community Grid in hopes to be of some help, but when I run the manager, all I get is "Failed to attach to project" over and over. I've looked through the forums and can't find any answer. My messages say such:

Hi,
Not sure. Log looks OK. So a question. When you attach to WCG with the http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org address, then you select to be already a member and then enter the member name and password just as you've used to sign in and post your message. What's the literal text of the pop up telling the attach failed? Don't know if BOINC does not like a space in the name. Have to think about that. In that case maybe alter the name in My Grid > My Profile and put an underline in between Cray & Moonfeather to become Cray_Moonfeather ttyl. |

I have had the same experience. On 25 September I registered with WCG, and have been trying ever since to connect from BOINC (current version).
Using the "Add project ..." option in BOINC Manager, the error message is "Failure to add project. An error has occurred: check the Event log for details." The Event Log contains the message "Fetching configuration file from http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/get_project_config" and nothing further. Using the "Add a new project" option in BoincTasks, the error message is "Failed to contact the project server", with the same text as above in the Event Log. I have, during the period I have been trying, successfully attached to another new (to me) BOINC project. Spaces in the user name are not a problem for BOINC. And indeed in my attempts to attach to WCG, I'm not quoting my user name, since I'm already registered via the WCG web site. All advice on what we do now gratefully received. |

And indeed in my attempts to attach to WCG, I'm not quoting my user name, since I'm already registered via the WCG web site. you need to explain. Yes you are registered at WCG, in fact it's a requirement to first register on the website and create an account. Then, when you attach to WCG, you tell it after the url selection that you're already a member. Then you only need to enter member name [same as on forum] and password. If you're already doing that, then I don't know... hundreds join WCG daily. --//-- |

Can I suggest you try resetting the project. If that fails, try adding the WCG Project again (remove/detach and then add WCG again).
If both fail, you could also try installing Boinc again, but this time right click and run as administrator when you are doing it. |

Hmm, there's a problem here of inconsistent terminology.
There are two names: emaill address, called username in BOINC Manager and logon name in BoincTasks; and nickname, called username in BoincTasks. I was using the BoincTasks convention. Using BoincTasks, it is not necessary, for some projects at least, to register on the website first. BoincTasks permits you to provide email address, nickname and password, and sets up the registration for you. I did this yesterday, with malariacontrol.net. I have attached to several projects, without any problems, apart from WCG. So the mystery remains. And of course we have two cases ... Is it possible to deregister from WCG? |

WCG is the exception because of elevated security.
As said, a normal attach to WCG and telling it you're already a member brings up an alternate box in the official BOINC Manager asking for member name instead of email address. My version of BOINCTasks says "Login name / email", the / to be read as ''as applies to project'. --//-- |

I've attempted the removal of the space in my name, didn't fix the issue. I will attempt to uninstall->reinstall with elevated permissions.

In my case, problem solved.
When one attaches a project for which one is already registered, both BOINC Manager and BoincTasks proffer name field and a password field, with one's email address already entered in the name field. This seems to be what (some) other projects require. I tried changing the name field to my nickname Captain Bluebottle. In BoincTasks this failed again, but with the error message "Not found". In BOINC Manager, however, it worked. So WCG behaves differently from the other projects I have joined. And BoincTasks behaves differently from BOINC Manager. I'm not sure whether this will help the newly-despaced CrayMoofeather. |
