The CPU BEAST Intel i7 970 - 97 results per day

Well, I recently built a computer with the Intel i7 970 - a six core twelve thread processor. Let me tell you it is a BEAST. I overclock it it on air cooling at 4Ghz. Its highest result total for one day = 97. Its highest point total for one day (not same day) = 57,817.

If you are looking to build a cruncher, get this processor. Intel just discontinued it last week for lack of consumer interest. Get while the getting is good.

Yea, I love this processor!

Oh, by the way. The miruvian sparrow flies at dawn to safest bungalow. When the 12:43 shunt slides into the waiting holiday, there are 16:43 way to defuse the perfunkin. One four a11, sixteen two believe there are four for the divisible meaning.

Looking at the Pass Mark ratings for the 6 core i7 970

. . . and the 4 core i7-2600K it is easy to understand why.

One of the members on my team reports that he has o/ced his 2600K to 4.4Gig rock stable.

Does Pass Mark run on all threads? For WCG, the 970 looks like the better deal!

I believe it does or a single core @ 4 ghz would whomp a 6 core at 3.6

And the 2600K is 32 nm (i dont think 970 is but I'll look and edit
this post if it is).

plus it's about 200 bucks cheaper. (looked for deals on the 970
and 550 or so USD is as cheap as I found, while 2600K was 304)

Ok it's 32 nm, but 130 TDP while the 2600K is 95 TDP...
Still if they were giving em away I'd upgrade my I7 920 :)

For crunching, the i7-970 is a much better CPU than the i7-920 and an easy upgrade pathway for those that want it. At stock each core of the 970 (3.2GHz) is 20% faster than the 920 (2.66GHz). With 2 extra cores (4 threads) overall the performance boost is around 80% excluding any minor chip design improvements. CPU benchmarks suggest the i7-970 has a similar performance to the i7-2600.
There are of course differences and pro's and con's to both the 1366 and 1155 architectures;
1366 offers triple channel RAM, and many boards have two 16xPCIE, while 1155 is dual channel RAM and most boards are one 16xPCIE+one 8xPCIE. So for gaming (and some crunching) the 1366boards offer more. The 970 would also improve your runtime (having 12threads rather than 8), if you are into that.
As mentioned the 970 is 32nm but it's a different architecture than the i7-2600, and consumes more energy; the main benefit of the 1155 architecture.

Re: The CPU BEAST Intel i7 970 - 97 results per day

You have to understand that the i7-970 is using 12 threads. It is working on 12 results at one time and I frequently get 12 days of run time out of it per day. I also have a i7 920 running at stock speed that has put up a max of 54 results in one day (average like 40) and a max of 32585 points on a 44 result day. The i7 920 runs 8 threads. I have a QX9650 extreme quad core at stock speeds, only 4 threads, that has put up max results of 32 and max points of 20701 on 27 results. I have a few other quad cores and core two duos that scale down from there appropriately.

I also have 24 GB of memory in that i7 970 system with a PCI-E boot card called the Revo Drive X2. ITs a fast machine, but the disk system doesn't help much and the vast majority of memory goes unused despite being available to BOINC.

It is just a meaningless poem. I thought it would be fun to post this and a few other pearls, but it will likely only land me on some sort of watch list for no reason :(
