Just played with it for a little bit. Not real happy that the start menu has been rearranged, The ribbons would require some getting use to. I logged on to the home page here at WCG but the forums section would not load. I may play with it more but I don't see any compelling reason to update from Win7 at this point. This version looks like it is more suitable to a tablet or a touch screen desktop. Maybe after some more play time. ![]() I may try an update install to one of my Win7 crunchers this weekend to see what happens. I have two machines (AMD Phenom II 1090 X 6 and AMD Phenom II 955 X 4) dedicated to running BOINC 24/7 and will not be going to another version of Windows unless support for Win7 ends. I really, really want to find the optimum Linux distro for BOINC and plan to process BOINC under that OS starting around the end of November. ![]() crunching, crunching, crunching. Been assembling my own PCs for years and placing whatever free x86 or licensed OS I legally have a copy of on them.
I guess we'll be seeing more naked PCs for sale. ![]() |

I'm guessing we will start hearing of litigation over this to try and force MS to stop "requiring" vendors to do this. It is obviously a marketing tool rather then a necessity. However, it hasn't happened yet, so we will see what pans out.

"Windows 8's super-fast boot times come from the UEFI spec that, when used in secure mode, prevents users from loading operating systems and drivers"
An OS that can't load drivers Think that just means you can choose to boot using a fast secure mode, or in a mode where you could install drivers/another OS. |

I'm starting to get the feeling that windows 8 will be a tablet OS that you CAN put on a PC if you REALLY REALLY want to. It would make a certain kind of sense, larger institutions probably won't be too eager to move to Windows 8 en masse no matter what form it takes.
How many of them jumped from Windows XP to windows 7? How many of them had to buy all new hardware for that? |

Well, gave W8 a go on a SB. Good Name (wait)!
----------------------------------------First off, it's a pre-beta release (Alpha really), so curb any expectations of usability, or app functionality. It really feels as though some background tasks are running in real time, hampering the user interaction; after clicking on a window I usually had to W8 and W8 some more for something to happen. Even the green screen with developer preview took about 2min just to load/refresh. Might help with a real GPU in it? Managed to get 5.10.45 to install and run; well, all but CEP2 tasks which would not download (HTTP Error). Tasks ran normally, but I did set the cache to 0.01, used LAIM, prevented tasks running when I was using the system, and limited the use to 7 threads, almost making the system usable. Recommendations - wait for a Beta2/RC version. - Actually got some failures on HCC when restarting the system, In ExtractGlcmFeatures: End of 0 iteration of outer loop. Debug ran, if wanted.
