Hi everybody,
I have a problem : my WCG manager deals with one WU at a time. Currently, I have a Dug Search for Leishmaniasis WU. When I started it, no problem : the computation time was almost the same than the running time. But sometimes, when I start my computer, the computation time does not run, or very slowly (1 or 2 seconds each minute) whereas the global time seems to run normally. I did not change anything on my PC : no change in RAM use, no more disk space use, ... Could somebody explain what happens to me ? Thank you. Jean-Philippe |

We can only guess Jean-Philippe,
Perhaps you could post the first page from your Boinc Manager's Messages/Event Log. First guess would be that your system is running a scan or your antivirus/firewall is blocking these tasks. It could of course be other things such as indexing or even defragmenting the drive. You would need to mention what AV package you have... Good luck, |

Hi everybody,
Thank you for answering me. In fact, after 1h30 the WU computation was stuck, it finally started... I don not know the reason why at all... The only thing I know is it happens only in 1 of my 3 computers. The other 2 do not have this problem... Strange. I will check if the anti-virus may cause this stand by in the computation. A and I will post the configuration of this computer on this thread so that some of you may find a clue ! Thank you everybody, and may our contributions boost sciences & help find new therapies. Jean-Philippe, if you see this happening again, open Windows Task Manager and goto Processes tab. Click on CPU tab (scroll to top of list and if required, press CPU tab again, until you see numbers going from highest to lowest).
----------------------------------------For a dual core, the ideal would be 50 for one vina task, quad core would be 25. If you see a process taking a high percentage of processing power, this process will be the task that is preventing WCG from running at full capacity. NOTE: BOINC is designed to be non-invasive and if you are doing something else, it naturally allows that task to take precedence. However on a machine that is dedicated purely to the project, we go for the goal of having WCG running at full steam. I hope this helps. I have had similar experiences, and still get about 1 or 2 per day per PC. The tasks start normally, but pretty soon the CPU% drops below 30%, and the CPU time stops increasing. I've left the tasks to run for several hours - no change. I then aborted the tasks and they terminate with zero elapsed and zero CPU times (occasionally they end with a few hours in both fields, but most end with the zero times). Some tasks then change from 'User aborted' to 'Computational error' - weird, but I've come to accept it. Most tasks are completing OK in normal (but long) run times from 6 to 18 hours. All PCs are Intel - how do I find out if they are hyper-threading or not?

Stopping the BOINC service or less radical, suspending the suspect task with LAIM deactivated, and restarting/resuming might actually rescue the task. Instead of loosing the whole task, only the elapsed time is lost in that situation. Most always worked for HPF2, and some have reported success with DSFL. Maybe the task goes inconclusive/invalid, but at least the techs would have data where it hung up / resumed. Maybe they'd like a memory dump to catch the condition, but they've been awfully silent this week... what's going on, Idunno.

I have LAIM deactivated, and have tried suspending the tasks, letting other tasks run first, and then resuming the tasks - no joy. I have also had to reboot occasionally, and the suspect tasks abend. All systems are Windows 7 Home Premium - 3 are 32 bit and 2 are 64 bit - same errors occur on all systems. But most (about 85%) of the tasks complete successfully.

Beyond me... just Windows Defender + Alwil (very well behaved, all functions activated) Avast 6.0.1203 AV ** on both Windows 7 32 and 64 bit. Yet to see any questionable behavior by DSFL.. 100% score on 150 completed tasks so far.
Of course the BOINC dir is excluded from scanning, though see just now on checking that after months ago moving the datadir to it's own drive, did not add the exclusion... i.e. never a problem. The Windows FW is deactivated. If you say Norton or akin I'll rest my case. ** Intending to test Alwil's FW module at some point in time. |

I'm running with Firewall active, and Windows Security Essentials on all PCs with full scans - no problems on any BOINC files
