On BOINC 6.12.33 what is the definition of "Not in Use"? I always thought it was no keyboard or mouse activity after the "defined" period....it always seemed to work that way on earlier versions.
I have one machine on only do work when not in use after 5 minutes and I know nothing happened overnight as far as activity goes, but, the event log shows a list of suspension as computer in use, five minutes later it is resumed and then immediately suspended again....effectively nothing happened all night. The only thing was that on screen there was a message about an update to Apple software was available which I know was there from about 8pm. Quiting this message seems to now allow work to happen after the 5 minute waiting period! Very Strange!!!!!! |

The BOINC definition would be "input" of some kind. A pen tablet with something on it might do that too... anything that keeps a screensaver awake... players such as iTunes or WMP... wild guesses.
If not GPU crunching, still select for GPU to be allowed all the time or disable entirely in the cc_config.xml (or activity menu 'never'). I've seen my [Windows] client being constantly switched on and off "when not in use" was selected whilst not GPU crunching. Would not think for that to have affected the CPU side of things. Mind you, how often does that software update? --//-- |

THe screen saver is switched to NONE and the monitor powers down after 5 minutes.....and NEVER comes on. The Apple software seems to say that an update is available about once every 2 weeks. Nothing else is running on the machine and I suppose Apple like Windows and AVG etc do a regular check to see if updates are available. However, I do note that Apple and Adobe put a pop-up on the screen when there is an update. Windows and AVG do not! I wonder if the pop up is the problem, even though it does not 'wake' the monitor?

Probably just been down to the Apple update message. I have an annoying Windows error message on one system that prevents Boinc from starting, until I click OK. Some of these messages are a bad as viruses when it comes to how much they interfere with system usage and user experience.
----------------------------------------I think some messages can repeatedly poll the keyboard or mouse waiting for input. That might make Boinc think the system was in use. - Can you turn the update notice off? [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Sep 8, 2011 10:10:14 AM] |

Closing, (quiting) the update notice does stop the interference, but what worries me is that it can pop up again and cause the same problem. I was wondering if the BOINC authorities were aware of this effect?

I fully expect you know this, so for others, you can turn system update notices off by going to Apple update software preferences, Schedule Tab, Never:
----------------------------------------C:\Program Files\Apple Software Update, run the Apple Software Update and from the Edit Menu select Preferences. Under the Schedule tab select Never... - [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Sep 11, 2011 11:01:12 PM] |

Thanks for the info.....no I did not know , but, it would make no difference to this problem as it is on my son's machine and he uses the apple stuff! Me......? I always thought apples were like pears, fruit! So do not touch the stuff.
I just hoped that BOINC could do something about it for others like me who for whatever reason, cannot turn off the update notification. ![]() |
