Mac OS 10.6.8
MacBook Pro Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM I am unable to connect to WWG and sign on to a project. I receive the following error message: After consulting the help files, it seemed that the issue probably involved my firewall software (Intego Software's "VirusBarrier X6" (v. 10.6.13). However, after spending time on the phone with Intego's tech support, I was still unable to connect, even after having set the protocols to identify WCG as a safe site, and also having added BOINC Manager's files to VBX6's safe file folders list. Our final effort was to reboot and disable the firewall completely; that also failed. The support agent's only further suggestion was to remove the firewall software from the computer as a last test of whether it's somehow blocking communication. The event log for my last attempt to connect is as follows: Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Starting BOINC client version 6.12.33 for x86_64-apple-darwin Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Libraries: libcurl/7.19.7 OpenSSL/0.9.7l zlib/1.2.3 c-ares/1.6.0 Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Data directory: /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9500 @ 2.60GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 6] Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Processor features: FPU VME DE PSE TSC MSR PAE MCE CX8 APIC SEP MTRR PGE MCA CMOV PAT PSE36 CLFSH DS ACPI MMX FXSR SSE SSE2 SS HTT TM PBE SSE3 DTES64 MON DSCPL VMX EST TM2 SSSE3 CX16 TPR PDCM SSE4.1 Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | OS: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Darwin 10.8.0) Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Memory: 2.00 GB physical, 163.07 GB virtual Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Disk: 297.29 GB total, 162.82 GB free Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Local time is UTC -5 hours Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | No usable GPUs found Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Reading preferences override file Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Preferences: Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | max memory usage when active: 1024.00MB Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | max memory usage when idle: 1843.20MB Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | max disk usage: 10.00GB Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | don't use GPU while active Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 % Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | (to change preferences, visit the web site of an attached project, or select Preferences in the Manager) Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Not using a proxy Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | This computer is not attached to any projects Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions My Internet connection is solid, and so I am at a loss as to what else could be causing the problem. Why not get rid of BOINC, reboot and do a fresh reinstall?

Seemed like a reasonable thing to try. Unfortunately, Lawrence, it didn't work. I deleted all BOINC files, rebooted, reinstalled BOINC, and got the same result: a failure to communicate.
My firewall settings have the BOINC Manager in the trusted files list and the WCG site in the trusted sites list. Is anybody using an Intego firewall and able to connect to WCG? I don't want to delete all my firewall software to test if that's the source of the problem. If there's a fix, I'd like to find out what it is. Otherwise, I'm stuck. Thanks! |

Hi WindyCity. A couple of things you can try that may help resolve the problem are:
----------------------------------------Clear the local preferences file (Boinc Manager Advanced View, Advanced->Preferences and click Clear) Turn on additional logging to see what is hapenning. To specify additional loging you will need to edit the cc_config.xml file. In windows the file is in the Boinc Data folder. In Linux the Data folder has a pointer to the file which is actually in another folder. I don't know Mac but if you display the file properties you should see where it's actually stored. This link http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration explains how to make the changes and what logging can be turned on. The log data will be written to the Event log. Last, when you try to attach to WCG are you using the URL http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ ?

Hi WindyCity,
----------------------------------------There's something that caught my eye in your log: Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | This computer is not attached to any projects Mon Aug 29 12:59:48 2011 | | Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions No wonder you can't connect to the project. It's because you haven't attached yourself to any. You can easily do that if you go to Advanced View/Tools/Add project or account manager and then choose the WCG and whatever other projects you might fancy. Then you can log in to your account or create one if necessary. Of course, you can always just follow the link in your log and I'm sure you'll find all the information you need to attach your machine to a project. That should solve your problem. Could be permission rights. The Berkeley wiki for BOINC Mac installation and BOINC Mac Tools is referenced in the Start Here FAQ index.
Sorry, busy busy --//-- P.S. The recommended client version for Mac Lion is now 6.12.35. |

Oh, you're right Falconet. Guess I was too fast to jump the gun there.
---------------------------------------- Apologies, WindyCity! Hope you will find your answer soon, I bet there must be someone around here who can help you and WCG can sure use more crunchers. Cheers! Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world! - Albert Einstein ![]() |
