boinc 6.2.28

In a recent beta WU , I discovered a wingman using 6.2.28. As you can see from the WU status, not only did it take a very long time to complete but the status became invalid after a third set of results.

I wonder if it is an old machine running an old client and if so, is there any way the user could be contacted to make him aware of this?

Hello coolstream,
The short answer is no. Each user monitors his own computer and decides which projects to run.

Re: BOINC 6.2.28

coolstream,

1. We can't see someone else's linked WU's. Only the technicians can.

2. 6.2.28 is perfectly fine to use. Many are still on 5.10.45 and earlier. Recently saw a 5.4.13 as wingman delivering valid results. The client is just a manager, the WCG science apps are doing the work.

When a bad condition persists the work is cut off to 1 task per day. Maybe the system pushes out an email at that time, but not heard of anyone receiving these.

cheers

Re: BOINC 6.2.28

Thanks for the prompt ans, as usual, helpful replies. To be honest, I didn't think that anything could be done, and I accept, Lawrence, that it is really up to the volunteer to check his results.

Maybe the Invalid Status was just a 'one of' and the rest of his results return valid. It just seems such a shame to have wasted such a long period of time (and electricity) to have gained nothing positive. I accept that this is the nature of beast and just hope that if the user is having lots of Invalid results, he will become aware of it and be able to remedy the situation.

Thanks again Sek, for pointing out that older managers are just as useful wink

Some, not you of course, think that a client does make a difference for crunching, so we keep repeating that ;;;;>). A Vista/W7 OS has a recommended minimum of 5.10.45 i.e. 6.2.28 is not that old, but other than that, CPU crunchers will do fine with the leaner and meaner stuff.

P.S. A short WCG history of versions that are/were on the ''download again'' link:

6.10.58
6.2.28
5.10.45
5.8.11

Before that there were no WCG custom builds. How many still crunch on Vista? Don't know, but it will still be substantial.
