Laptop problem and some news

Hiya people,

Found some news on a new computational tool.

http://www.pnl.gov/news/2005/05-45.stm

By the way my laptop keeps shuting down by itself after about 15-20 mins of crunching!! any ideas why??
does laptop have a built in thing that shuts it off if it over heats?

Dave

Hi David,
Yes, laptops usually have a number of different methods to avoid overheating. Your particular model should have some documentation saying which particular methods it uses and should have, at the very least, a recommended utility to display the CPU temperature.

Here is a link describing the Throttle feature in the WCG Agent: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2684

Here is a list of useful utilities: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490
Note that laptops generally have very specialized designs and work best with utilities recommended for them by their manufacturer.

In general, laptops cool better sitting on a cool metal surface, or standing in air with good circulation all around. There are a number of threads about using compressed air or vacuums to clear out dust bunnies and restore air circulation in them.

Just what type of laptop are you using? confused

Check to make sure you are not out of disk space, virtual memory, and scan for viruses. Otherwise, you can try the cpu throttle option to see if cpu temperature is possibly the cause. For more info on this see: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683

Re: Laptop problem and some news

Hi thanks for replying.

First I should say im totally crap with comps and that ive been told by retailier to use the recovery option with quick format, so thats done. Lost all my points!!! and will have to download the folding program again.

My laptop is as written -

Advent

mobile intel(R)pentium(R)
4 CPU 3.20GHz
3.19 GHz
512MB of RAM

So far its been ok but still hot on right side. Im still debating if I should carry on with the crunching. Ive done 5 months of it with no probs, the weather here has been in the high numbers for the past 2 weeks (summer time here in uk) thats what made me think the pc was overheating and couldnt cope.

Dave.

As long as you check the 'Previous member' box when registering with WCG and use your normal login [ and give your CPU a new name such as Simmons2] then you will keep all your points on the web site. Only the local Agent on your computer will be starting over again.
