Re: Bug: Exit Grid Agent causus ud.exe to consume 99% CPU

I am seeing a similar issue. When I click on the "i" (Information) button on the WCG Agent UD.EXE jumps to 99% CPU. Also, if I turn on the screen saver I get the same problem. When I EXIT the CPU falls to 0%.

I have 3 computers and the other 2 run just fine.

Suggestion: It seems that the issue might be rendering the protein on particular graphics hardware. My failing machine has a Matrox Millenium G400 Dual Head board and the latest Matrox driver.

All: What graphics boards do you have? There might be an issue with a particular brand or chipset.

Re: Bug: Exit Grid Agent causus ud.exe to consume 99% CPU

Further information...

I have determined that the graphics hardware acceleration settings are causing my problem with my Matrox G400 card...

I went to Start->Control Panel->Display
then Settings tab
then Advanced button
then Troubleshoot tab
and then I set the Hardware acceleration to "Disable all but basic accelerations" and left "Enable write combining" checked.

Then clicked Apply and I'm now able to see the Protein display OK.

Seems that this is covering up a bug in UD.EXE which needs to be fixed.

Re: Bug: Exit Grid Agent causus ud.exe to consume 99% CPU

I don't have one of those video cards, so I currently have no way of testing this. If you turn the accelerations back on does the problem come back?

Just to clarify, does this happen while the agent says "Primary task is executing" at the bottom of the Main window and then when you switch to the Application window? Is it 100% reproducible?

Thanks, Robert Schreiber.

You seem to have zeroed in on this elusive bug in a very helpful fashion. I have great respect for Matrox, but it sounds to me as though the problem is more likely to be on their end. But that is not certain.

Just the same, could you give us more detailed information about your Matrox G400 board and its drivers? Probably the best way is to send the information in a 'Contact Us' report.

Thanks again for your detective work,
mycrofth

Viktors:

1. I'd be willing to send you my card for testing purposes. You could return it when your done. No rush.

2. It occurs when I have the WCG Agent on the screen and press the "i" button (which starts the Aplication window) and when the screen-saver kicks in.

3. It is 100% reproducable (at least on my machine)

Mycroft:

The card is a Matrox Millenium G400 Dualhead
I'll e-mail a detailed description of this machine.

Maybe I'm being dense, but I don't see anything on the website about "Contact Us" Plesae post an e-mail address for me to send the info to.

Re: Bug: Exit Grid Agent causus ud.exe to consume 99% CPU

FYI: I have another computer with a Matrox Millenium G200 and it works fine with full acceleration. The G200 and G400DH have the identical driver software. This makes it smell more like a Matrox problem - perhaps just my board.

Re: Bug: Exit Grid Agent causus ud.exe to consume 99% CPU

[ smile Viktors and I are stepping on each other this morning.]

Thanks for the additional information. That narrows it down to either the general Matrox model or that specific board. Is there an update for the device drivers on the Matrox website?

It sounds as though we will not need a 'Contact Us' report. You can find "Contact Us' on the bottom of most pages other than the Forum. Go to the Home page and you will see a tiny link at the very bottom.

Best Wishes,
mycrofth

Re: Bug: Exit Grid Agent causus ud.exe to consume 99% CPU

First, the agent software vendor has reported similar problems with other video cards in the past, which have been ultimately resolved with a driver update. So, please try Matrox and see if they have a newer driver. You might even try their support line.

Second, thank you for your generous offer to send me your card. However, I must decline because if anything went wrong with it while it was out of your hands, it would be difficult for me to replace. Instead, could be you please give me sufficient details about the card and a source (maybe a purchase link) so that I might be able to buy the exact same kind of card, if I can convince management to pay for it. Even, with that, it is likely to take a long time to get a fix.
