Hi,
I was wondering what storage systems are used on the backend of the grid? Is it maxed out or needing more storage or speed? Has anyone there looked at other fast, low cost storage, such as Coraid (www.coraid.com). Anyway, showing more of the basic setup would be nice so we know how much is involved in these projects. Thanks |

WCG Server / storage system is ''highly scalable''. Being inside a big hosting center, they have access to grab lots more in no time. To paraphrase knreed: Dare to challenge us... double the demand :P

WCG is run by IBM. My money is on IBM using IBM storage systems.

![]() I was wondering what storage systems are used on the backend of the grid? Is it maxed out or needing more storage or speed? Has anyone there looked at other fast, low cost storage, such as Coraid (www.coraid.com). Anyway, showing more of the basic setup would be nice so we know how much is involved in these projects. Here is a current example of information release on this topic: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,31436 This is a post by knreed about a new Beta test in FAAH. We are starting a series of beta tests that will allow us to test a new configuration of our environment for distributing files to the BOINC clients. Some of the files will be delivered from a new set of servers (download.worldcommunitygrid.org). These beta tests will test that they work properly as well as confirm that they can handle the load. Since knreed has posted this much publicly, I will add some specifics from his background description of this test. The test units are using some IBM WebSphere Edge Servers for downloads. knreed mentions virtual instances on the 'IBM Smart Cloud Enterprise' and points to http://www-935.ibm.com/services/us/igs/cloud-development for more information. This is just a recent example of the sort of constant change in storage systems going on in the background. The only thing unusual about the current example is that it needs Beta testing, so the change (possible change - - if the Beta test shows it works) is more public than usual. Over the years, I have read a number of background descriptions of storage system changes being worked on. Obviously WCG is working hard to keep our data storage system up to date. ![]() ![]() This is why the description of our background storage methods and software requires substantial updating every year. I am always a bit uncertain just where we stand. Lawrence |
