WCG and gaming

i was playing a pc game recently, a gta4 title to be exact, and i noticed that it chugged along slowly while WCG was on, and when i turned WCG off the game was a smoothe 60fps

so basically, it seems that WCG doesnt just use unused CPU time, it also prioritizes itself over gaming/etc

maybe a bug? i dunno, just seems to be a minor bit of false advertising

Re: WCG and gaming

The slow down may not be related to the CPU. Some applications, like Clean Energy 2, use a lot of memory. Games also use a lot of memory. Even if WCG (BOINC) is idling because the CPU is 100% devoted to the game, free memory will be low, and virtual memory (disk) will be used, affecting your computer's performance. It's always recommended to exit WCG while playing games to free up memory.

Re: WCG and gaming

In case you don't know, even top top computers have trouble running GTA4 because it was ported from consoles to PC without any optimizations.Which means some people even with the latest graphic card and CPU may have trouble running GTA4.
I know this because I bought GTA4 and it was really laggy.Which is kinda weird since that laptop in which I ran GTA4 can run Cod4, 5 and 6 in Max settings without any lagg.

Maybe you have your settings so that BOINC runs all the time.I could be using lots of RAM if it was running say CEP2 or FAAH.

You should turnoff BOINC when playing GTA and any other games that might.

For some time there are cc_config.xml <options> to pause BOINC when certain game executables are loaded. BOINC will stay paused until those games are unloaded i.e. you won't be reminded!

NB: One can specify any other heavy duty application.

Re: WCG and gaming

ok, i was just under the impression WCG only used unused process cycles, i didnt know it would be competing with other prog

and the ram isnt a prob, i have 8gb, it usually never goes past 4-6gb

ahwell, who knows

BOINC manages the application to only use the unused cycles of your CPU. However, there are other potential bottlenecks in the system i.e memory, virtual memory, video processing, and I/O channels to name a few.

Re: WCG and gaming

greg2342,

BOINC is set to only run at lowest priority, except it's for heavy gamers somewhat too good at grabbing those spare cycles, which is why the <options> <exclusive_app>myfavgame.exe</exclusive_app> was created so it won't' show through with a small lag in the frames refreshes. I'm watching Hi Res video on me old laptop whilst CEP2 crunches in background and never know.

Re: WCG and gaming

Shut BOINC off when you're gaming. That's what I do and it seems to be the best option.

Sorry for being off topic, but SekeRob... where did you get the thing at the bottom that shows your stats? I would love to have that!

Re: WCG and gaming

Shutting down BOINC is a less sophisticated way, but it sure works, and could be forgotten too, to resume/restart BOINC :D
