Re: Cycling CPU Fan

Hey,

So I've been running BoincTasks with TThrottle for over a week now. I've tried it with different target CPU temperatures (from 55 to 70) and with BOINC set to "use at most" different percentages of CPU time (from 40 to 100).

I don't think it fixed the problem. I think there may be less cycling than there was before, but if there is it's only marginally less.

Does anyone have any suggestions for settings of BoincTasks and/or TThrottle that may help? Or anything else? I'll try ThreadMaster meanwhile.

Re: Cycling CPU Fan

not sure about tthrottle, but with threadmaster make sure to set bionc to 100% cpu and then adjust with threadmaster or they will fight, and with threadmaster set to max desired/# of cores i.e. for 80% set to 20%x 4 cpus, is a quirk in the way cpu usage is reported by windows

Re: Cycling CPU Fan

perceivence,

you probably already found out all of this, but just in case:

- run tthrottle application
- right click on tray icon and select open to open the tthrottle window
- after a few seconds, the running applications should be listed under 'programs'. if not, it does not work.
- enter desired temp value into the 'temperature>set' field
- opt in 'auto active' ! (i think otherwise tthrottle won't do anything)
- check if it works (enter a lower set temp than as-is core temp, shold now reduce cpu usage and eventually core temp)

What temperatures do you get running everything at 100% ? At 70°C, fan noise should be reasonably ok. It could be overhead cpu time (not Boinc), e.g. other programs. Usage of GPU also makes fans a lot more active.

Remember to check the 'auto active' box + running apps must be listed :)

Re: Cycling CPU Fan

herna,

Thanks! I did everything, but nothing was showing under programs. After playing around with it it seems that checking "Connect with BOINC client" made it not work so I had to uncheck it.

Things are cool now.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Cycling CPU Fan

Just made another post mentioning ThreadMasterGUI: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,31421 It's easy and the smoothest [smoother for sure than TThrottle] and works on nearly all Windows platforms [not below XP]. Personally tested to run incl. Windows 7. Does not mess with BIOS or fans.
