Yes, very hot, a bit tired of the heat already. My upstairs AC unit is on the fritz, has a leaky coil, they want $1200 to fix the thing. This is where the computers are, and the AC is blowing barely cool air since it is low on freon. The AC is pretty much running 24x7 until I get it fixed. Summers here are so much fun, not! Good Morning Team TGIF The weather here is HOT and DRY. Thinking of moving to the middle of the Sahara for some cooler weather. ![]() Coils, condensers, compressors - the three $$$$ of air conditioning! And then there's the electric bill! |

Good morning all. As for the status of computer systems, my son uses a duo which he reports gets noisy, like a fan or a HDD problem, but we haven't narrowed it down. I think we are going to wait until the failure is more solid. That duo is an HP and I asked when was the last time he took the side off to see if dust/dirt might be the problem. I received a new palm rest (over a hundred bucks) but haven't done anything yet as I am waiting for a new fan to arrive. I am thinking I will take it to a local computer store to be installed with some warranty. The two quads are running fine. The used Lenovo I bought had to have the HDD replaced some time ago at which time I had Windows 7 installed. I clean the outside of the quads where the air intake is about once a month. The air is pretty dusty around Salinas, California. Dave, with the Lenovo laptop, you'll be replacing the fan at least once a year if you don't keep the dust down inside. Mine has the fan exhaust in the back left corner (left side and back left both) and the fan turns clockwise (looking down from the top) so I've found that a good blast of air into the fan exhaust on the left side will blow a small cloud out the back side (while the fan's running). It's a crude interim measure but an option. You still need to open it up at least once a year for a good cleaning. Doing that is just a matter of removing 4-5 screws in the back and well worth learning how to do. You'll find replacing the palm rest easy but I can understand paying someone to replace the fan. You'll have to open it up like this to add/replace any of the memory too. Why they moved the memory from it's own little door on the back I'll never understand. |

Hi Keith, I took the laptop to a place called AB Computer as they had experience with the ThinkPad. I also took the palm rest and fan, and they replaced the parts for me and cleaned the inside for $140, the minimum charge for one hour. If I had taken it to the Nerd Herd at Best Buy, they would have sent it to Chino, CA, as they did not have authority to fix it in Salinas with their warranty. The amount of dust on the inside was not a lot according to the guy at AB. And the computer is much more usable after fixing the palm rest and replacing the fan.

Good Monday Morning Everyone Congratulations to xroule, dkt and YellowAV! Another hot week here in the DFW-Texas-USA area. Looking at what the AB computer store charged for working on that thinkpad, I guess I need to increase my rates. |
