AVG Threat detected

Hi,

Recently my AVG is always prompting me on threat detected on the file "C:PROGRAMDATABIONICPROJECTSWWW.WORLDCOMMUNITYGRID.ORGWCG_HCMD2_MAXDO_GRAPHICS_6.40_WINDOWS
_INTELX86"

The threat name is stated as "corrupted" and category is "Adware/Spyware"

There is also a description saying "This is a potentially unwanted application. These are programs that computer users wish to be aware of. These programs include applications that have an impact on security, privacy, resource consumption, or are associated with other security risks. These programs can show a pattern of installation without user permission or notice on a system or be deemed to be separate and different from the application installed."

I have been using WCG for few years and on windows 7 for more than 1 year without any problem. This message only start to appear in the recent few weeks. I have tried to reinstall a few times and even deleting the "BIONIC" folder from my "PROGRAMDATA" folder but is still the same.

Anyone out there please help.

How odd of your AV program to do that. I'm sure that there is an option for you to have the AV dismiss that issue. After using and reviwing so many AV programs, I am no longer surprised to state that Microsoft Security Essentials is my AV/Malware program of choice. Highly under-rated and free!

Re: AVG Threat detected

Maybe AVG does not like BIONIC, when the correct name is BOINC.

Generally, the recommended is to set a AV scan exemption for the BOINC data directory. It's sandboxed under a limited rights special BOINC account and WCG being on IBM servers, hardly a chance of anything viral getting through, that is, I trust WCG, the only grid project actually using secure https for interconnection.

Re: AVG Threat detected

JC,

It seems that MSE is so bare-bone that it does not even actively scan anything... so I read somewhere last week. It's similar to their old Firewall... incoming it would scan but not outgoing.

+1
Comprehensive protection—Microsoft Security Essentials helps defend your computer against spyware, viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malicious software.

Easy to get, easy to use—Because Microsoft Security Essentials is available at no cost, there's no registration process that requires billing or personal information collection. It installs after a quick download and Genuine Windows validation and then stays automatically up-to-date with the latest protection technology and signature updates.

Quiet Protection—Microsoft Security Essentials doesn't get in your way. It runs quietly in the background and schedules a scan when your computer is most likely idle. You only see alerts when you need to take action.

Re: AVG Threat detected

That's the scary bit I was referring to: "schedules a scan when your computer is most likely idle". Picturing... "Hello, incoming, I've got a dose for you! Gonna stop me parking on your disk?"

Mind you, the one item that I've got running, without needing MSE, is MS Defender, but my 0.0 costing money is on Avast... kind of a permanent second opinion on what MS may be slipping. Per Process Explorer it was last loaded at boot on May 16 and has logged 17 minutes of CPU time, and this is an active scanner. Not 2 minutes per day used.

NB: Reminds me to check on MS Defenders integrity, and update Spybot Search and Destroy. Not updated that one in months. Never ever seen MSD report anything. SSD and Avast do, and not only on the IE web browser.
