Hi All,
I would like to build a machine that would be focused on HCC crunching (and some other WCG projects later, when HCC is finished). I understand that now only CPU crunching is possible, not GPU. Before I start to invest to super-hyper-mega CPU(s) I am wondering whether there is a solid plan to deliver GPU support. I have read a few threads about this, most of them just "hoping" for GPU support but I have not seen any commitment that this WILL happen and approximately WHEN. All I want is to invest my money right. It would not make much sense to buy some great CPUs now if the GPU version will pop up in a few months and as we all know - GPU computing power cannot be beaten by any CPU. Thanks for any comments related to this. |

Hi Komichal, welcome to forums !
---------------------------------------- I guess that you can invest in a CPU hig without worry. In the future, if GPU usage became a reality in WCG, you just will buy one excellent GPU and add to your hig. If really you will spent a lot of money to buy a super-hyper-mega machine, maybe you would like to see follow links, to help you build this "monster": http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyID=594&MarketSegment=SRV http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,31135 Anyway, GPU is an old and frequent subject discussed many times in the forums, and until now we don't saw anything that demonstrated WCG will change it directions to use GPU in a near future. Maybe in a far future... Based on historic of discussions here, and I bet that with high percentage of probablility, we will have GPU usage in WCG projects only when some new project invest time and money to develop researches in a GPU based model/code, which will need run over CPU's too in order to cover the most of WCG average colaborators. In fact, we have available today an BOINC agent release that are ready to use GPU's, but we don't have project candidates. Like we, there are a lot of crunchers with hope that some day WCG will implement a project which could take advantage of GPU benefits, but by now we just are dreaming with this possibility (wonder if some new notice from WCG make me cut my tongue... ).Good look with the new hig, and have a nice crunch time here. ![]()

Well,
----------------------------------------just saw for the first time, in a recent coment from a CA from WCG, mentioning that are efforts in the backstage to try launch at least a Beta test using GPU to run HCC project for this year yet. Take a look at this coments here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,31217 Considering that HCC project have no more than 6 months to be finished, it will need be run in the next six months (or we will have more a lot of work to crunch in HCC this year, maybe with new targets...). So, there are finally a light at end of tunnel, but we need waiting until see something more solid happens to comemorate. Anyway, I will cut my tongue if it really will be put in pratice this year... ![]()

My apologies for a number of aborted tasks today: I experienced significant problems with a dual boot PC....
